I was doing a complex family mediation recently via Zoom. One party was very stressed & was having trouble focusing. I suggested that we both take a break for 10 minutes, go outside, take 10 deep breaths, and get a cold (non-alcoholic) beverage. When we came back, she was much calmer & appreciated the break. We were able to resolve all issues quickly. I used to always offer food when I mediated in person. I used to say "I feed you & we settle." When people get hungry they get grumpy. Also, I always served "comfort" food. I tried "healthy" food -- but it rotten! People want carbs. I often tried to find common ground when mediating. Such as discussing their pets or children. Normally it was something totally off topic.

When emotions run high in a conflict resolution meeting, keeping your cool can be tough. A key to success is active listening, really hearing what others are saying and showing empathy. Use techniques like paraphrasing to confirm you get their point. Assertive communication is just as important; clearly share your feelings without losing your chill. Being aware of your own emotions helps prevent negativity from spilling over, so try some deep breathing or take a moment to pause before you respond. Watch your words and tone, too, careful language can avoid unnecessary drama. Lastly, foster a positive mindset by challenging biases and promoting empathy. It’s all about creating a respectful vibe where everyone can find common ground.

Staying regulated can be challenging. Some practices that can help are: - slowing down the conversation a bit. Putting pauses between your sentences helps the other person stay with you in the conversation and creates a better paced dialogue instead of one that feels fast and agitated. Fast moving dialogues can create more stress, anxiety and defensiveness. - ask open ended questions to deepen the conversation. - clarify assumptions These practices can help keep conversation at a higher level of respect while supporting you in staying regulated.

To maintain your composure during a heated conflict resolution meeting, start by taking deep breaths to manage your own emotions. Focus on active listening, acknowledging each person's feelings and perspectives without interrupting. Use a calm tone and encourage others to express themselves, reminding everyone that the goal is to find common ground. Redirect the conversation to shared objectives, emphasizing collaboration. If tensions rise, suggest a brief break to allow everyone to regroup. Finally, summarize key points and proposed solutions to create clarity, fostering a more constructive dialogue moving forward. This approach helps de-escalate emotions and keeps the focus on resolution.
