Instead of starting an education in a field that might not engage us in the future, it's better to have that assessed first. Just as we are selective with food choices, such as tasting different pastries in a cake shop to find the best one, we should be equally discerning with our career choices. However, unlike pastries, you cannot try out all professions. At most, you might explore ten different careers in a lifetime. Therefore, it is wise to get an assessment beforehand.

Assessment tools are not perfect or infallible, and they also have some drawbacks and limitations that you need to be aware of. For instance, they can be influenced by your mood, context, and expectations, which can affect your responses and results. Additionally, assessment tools are based on generalizations and averages, which may not capture your uniqueness and complexity as an individual. Furthermore, they are subject to bias and error such as cultural, gender, or linguistic bias, or measurement error which can affect the validity and fairness of the assessment tools. Moreover, they can be misused or misinterpreted, such as being treated as definitive or prescriptive rather than as suggestive or exploratory. Lastly, they can be outdated or irrelevant since the world of work changes rapidly and constantly and the assessment tools may not reflect the current and future realities and demands of the labor market.

Nothing in this world comes without drawbacks. Typically, assessment tools contain numerous questions at a certain level. Sometimes, clients may start providing inconsistent answers that do not accurately reflect themselves. If the tool begins to veer off course, it cannot easily be corrected, as there are a series of questions linked to each answer chosen in the assessment. However, these drawbacks can be mitigated by an efficient career counselor who understands the assessment process well. Ultimately, the final decision should be yours, not the assessor's.

When selecting the right assessment tools for career counseling, it's important to consider several factors, such as your purpose and goal, your preferences and style, your resources and availability, and your counselor's expertise and recommendation. For example, you should consider whether you need to explore interests, skills, personality, values, or goals; whether you prefer self-directed or guided assessment; whether you have access to online or offline assessment tools; and whether your counselor is trained to administer and interpret the assessment tools. These factors will help you determine which assessment tools best suit your needs and situation.

I like to use the Highlands Ability Battery as the preferred assessment for career coaching. It is the gold standard of assessments and provides objective performance-based measurements of natural abilities and there has been extensive research to match abilities and patterns of abilities with careers. The information can further be refined by considering interests and other factors. Most other assessments are self-report and not as reliable or consistent as I prefer to utilize in my practice.

Before taking the assessment tools, make sure you understand the purpose, format, instructions, and scoring of the assessment tools. During the assessment process, be honest and open with your responses, while avoiding overthinking or second-guessing yourself. It is also important to be in a relaxed and comfortable state of mind and environment, free from distractions or interruptions. After completing the assessment tools, review and reflect on your results, comparing them with other sources of information such as experience, education, feedback, or research. Discuss your results with your counselor and use them as a starting point for career exploration and planning. Keep in mind that assessment tools are meant to help you discover and decide for yourself rather than telling you what to do or who you are.

If you are a career counsellor who want to use career assessments, it all comes down to whether those tools are relevant and useful to the clients' career concerns and problems. If you are to suggest using the assessments, please explain it carefully to your clients why such tools are needed, how they are relevant to the issues at hand, what the assessments are about, what they measure and don't measure, any follow-ups needed, etc.
