Strangely, this article says nothing about personal practice and each band member’s responsibility to rehearse and learn their own parts. Yes, playing together is invaluable. Yes, skills assessment is helpful. And yes, a tricky part can be simplified if necessary. However, being a musician is a time-consuming profession that requires daily training also on your own. It requires dedication to improving your skills, and commitment to learning that tricky part. As a musician, one is never "ready", and every difficulty is part of the ongoing learning process. So when there’s a skill gap to overcome, pick up your instrument and practice!
