As an adult, an educator or a parent, I have always observed that aggression amongst kids doesn't show up in spur of a moment. It's a build-up, showcased as a result of multiple situations, instances, behavior patterns, happenings in the child's life and much more than that. What's important here is to always pay attention to the signs. Behavioral change happens gradually and not rapidly in kids. Mark the changes and address them when needed. I always pay attention to even a slight change in all of my students (no matter how young or old the child is and how minor or major change it is) and communicate on a timely basis with them and my availability to them makes it easy for them to open-up to me.

2 Stay Calm

Maintaining composure is vital when dealing with an aggressive student. Your calm demeanor can de-escalate the situation and serve as a model for how to handle conflict. Speak in a firm, yet gentle voice, and avoid showing frustration or anger, as these emotions can exacerbate the student's aggression. I believe that educators and other stakeholders can circumvent any aggressions in early stages of child development. Reverence and respect are taught from 0 to 5 years of life. Children tend to emulate the people closest to them. If they have no positive interactions with primary teachers (Mom, Dad, family, etc…) Community such as friends , neighbors, the village may step in. Common respect is a door that swings both ways. As Frederick Douglas said we need to build whole healthy children rather than attempting to fix broken adults…

One thing I find helpful is to keep in mind that aggression is typically a form of communication. Often times there is a need not being met and it is our job to figure out what that need is in a calm way.

6 Follow Up

Following up after an incident of aggression is an important step in the process. This could involve a one-on-one conversation with the student to discuss what happened, why it was inappropriate, and how similar situations can be handled differently in the future. Documenting these incidents and your interventions also helps in tracking patterns and making informed decisions about further actions that may be necessary.

Following up with students is very important. And it doesn’t have to be intrusive but yet sincere, not persistent but yet consistent nor does it have to be calculated but yet strategic; meaning it could something simple as a head nod, fist bump ?? and a good morning or how is your day going. Children just want to feel like they matter, and that they are relevant, thus the inappropriate behavior to be seen and/or head!

Personally I like to encourage them to think of repercussions or outcomes of that action/aggresion. Without sounding challenging, I ask them to”what do you want to happen next? What is your goal?” This often leads to them adopting some foresight and calming down. Mainly because they are usually only thinking about that very moment and when you ask them this it is unexpected and resets their thinking. It also helps them feel like they’re still in control and not being told what to do which ‘adds fuel to the fire’.
