Dealing with a client who challenges your coaching methods. How can you effectively navigate this situation?

Ante las inquietudes de tu coachee es muy importante escucharle desde sus preocupaciones, temores e inquietudes más que desde uno mismo. El foco principal es tu cliente. En una ocasión me pasó con una coachee que no se sentía cómoda con la metodología de coaching, estaba acostumbrada a la terapia psicólogica y a la metodología de ésta. Si bien su objetivo esta vez era abordable con coaching quería una metodología como la de la terapia. Era consciente de las diferencias porque se había hecho una sesión inicial de encuadre pero después de las dos primeras sesiones y de escucharla atentamente concluimos que el coaching al menos en esa etapa de su vida no era lo que la acomodaba.

By discussing their feedback openly and being willing to adapt my approach if necessary, I work to address their concerns and demonstrate the value of my coaching methods.

Being fully present in the conversation is paramount, and the first fundamental of good listening skills. Next you need to listen to understand, not to reply, if you are too busy forming a response in your head whilst the other person is still talking, you are not fully present and listening. After fully listening to what has been said, demonstrate that you have fully listened and understood by asking probing and clarifying questions. Unpack the story as much as possible, to get to the core of what is bothering your client.

A couch is a supporting pillar of growth and not a rigid rule follower; therefor, flexibility is the key to success.

To build trust, try to find common ground in which to build a relationship from, when you have built rapport this will act like a bridge and allow you to lead the client to where they want to go. Establishing trust also enhances the creation of a safe space for your client to show up fully, and you will not have to work as hard trying to extract information that is not being offered freely.

Reaffirming goals keeps the client on course. Remembering their Why helps keep momentum going, and any stumbling blocks can be overcome more easily. Adaptions can be made as they come up. Remember that circumstances may have changed since the goal was set, and conditions may be different.

For many, seeing is believing. Providing evidence with stories/anecdotes of your past experience with others (while maintaining confidentiality) in a similar situation/coaching context helps build trust. Likewise, showing evidence of how it might have helped for the same client is also helpful as many a times, clients have a blind spot towards their own progress and growth.

Indicators to measure success (evidence that we are moving forward toward our goals) 3. Achievements 4. Keep in mind moving forward
