Since Technical Support usually requires dealing with customers directly, apart from technical skills clear thought processes and clarity in the spoken words are essential. You don't want a confused customer in front of you. If we can convince the customer that we are following a clearly defined flowchart which they can check back, half the job is done. We should also allow them to cross-question you at times on technical parts even when they might not have the slightest idea. I have faced firsthand how sometimes silly queries give birth to a new idea that can be worked upon. Also, curiosity to find the cause of an event is very important.

Usually, i recommend new technical personnel of any department work with the Technical Support team. There is a lot to gain from this which justifies an Internship in this department. Patience, good spoken skills, a clear thought process, and curiosity to solve problems are some of the many skills that might help a technical person experience the real stuff. Additionally, as an intern, you get to learn how the customer thinks and what they want. Having an engineer stay in his or her silo is a bad idea. In the end, we cater to customers what they want, not what we want them to have.

Once you are a full-time technical support personnel, you don't just think about yourself or your product. You also have the added responsibility to think about the customer side of things. You might have to stand up against your colleagues(not literally) for the customer if any decision of theirs in certain parts of the design or solution provided might not be what the customer is asking for or in this case, is going to degrade the customer experience. On the contrary, you also get to be actively involved in some of the important decision-making which impacts the customer.

Technical Support role is all about acquiring and learning new skills in as many fields as possible. Of course, it has to be relevant to the requirement, but then you get to provide your ideas or solutions and be easily heard. This, in turn, grows you as a person and your soft skills improve. Also, the technical knowledge gives weight to your opinion. Also, since the role is not static, you can quickly acquire a new one and then search for better opportunities. From where i stand, the Technical Support role is going to be one of the first and the last roles to be ever replaced by AI. It is because the human touch might seem easy to replicate at first, but it's always a human who has it.

An example I have seen is where most technicians are taken in at Graduate Trainee which is equivalent to internship. It is good to start from the internship level especially if you are fresh in the field. Learn from experts, observe and listen more than you try to do. That way you will gain insights which will help you transition to full-time. Even as you transition to full time basis, make sure you are also doing self development, and even aspire to start your own company.
