Considering a career in Executive Coaching?

One of my biggest learnings after obtaining international training and certifications in coaching was that Executive Coaching is a game that requires experience and/or executive experience. Unlike life coaching, where you can play your role as a coach, even if you don't know the niche or area of life in which your client seeks improvement. The game of Executive Coaching is a demanding one, full of pressure and often with a short space of time to help your client perform or raise the company's KPIs. Therefore, my suggestion here is, to spend time shadowing executives, learning about their day-to-day lives. This way you will have more vocabulary to build rapport and thus a quality coaching process.

A career in executive coaching requires a solid foundation of core skills to effectively guide and develop leaders. Focus on developing active listening to understand clients deeply and hone effective communication for precise, impactful interactions. Cultivate empathy and emotional intelligence to relate to clients' experiences and manage responses appropriately. Enhance critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to navigate challenges strategically. Demonstrate strong leadership and influence, and be adaptable to meet diverse client needs. Uphold ethical judgment and professionalism, maintaining confidentiality and integrity. Commit to continuous learning to stay updated on the latest coaching techniques and industry trends.

It's interesting to see how culture shapes the way we behave. When I discovered Executive Coaching here in Brazil, they "sold me an idea" of a course, where you would do training and get a certificate and that's it, Voilà, Executive Coach. Of course this doesn't hold up. To be an Executive Coach, more than knowledge you need Executive background, you need to know the executive game field. But how did I do this back there without having these requirements? I started modeling, interviewing and asking to hang out with the Executives around me. This way I gained vocabulary, insights and built my own strategies. In short, don't limit yourself to a paper called certificate, nothing beats practice. Ask for feedback, adjust the route and practice.

If you choose to be independent, determine your pricing strategy, such as hourly rates, package deals, or retainer fees. Identify your target market, whether it’s executives in specific industries, high-potential leaders, or organizational teams. Develop a comprehensive marketing plan to attract clients, utilizing social media, networking events, and professional associations. Additionally, consider offering various services, including one-on-one coaching, group sessions, workshops, and online courses to diversify your income streams. By establishing a robust business model, you can create a sustainable and profitable career in executive coaching.

Stay updated with the latest industry literature, attend conferences, and participate in webinars to enhance your knowledge and skills. Join professional coaching associations to network with peers and gain insights from experienced coaches. Regularly seek feedback from clients and mentors to refine your coaching techniques.

Don't do it ?? It's too easy for anyone to declare themselves coaches. As I did a decade ago. Success is so much more difficult today due to commoditization of the market. Sell painkillers, it's so much easier than selling vitamins.
