Besides software engineering skills, you need to know how to Use a variety of APIs, OpenAI APIs, Anthropic, Gemini, open source models, etc. and Evaluate models. 99% of the time, you don't need to train or finetune the models, but you need to know how to measure model performance based on the business use cases, how to evaluate the risk of hallucination, and sometimes you need to craft a custom evaluation metric. APIs and GPUs can be expensive. You need to know how to deploy solutions efficiently and optimize cost vs performance. If you want to level up your AI engineering skills, start with an API and build project.
