When a client becomes overly dependent on your guidance for decision-making, it’s vital to address this by fostering resilience and empowering them to make choices independently. Begin by acknowledging their uncertainty and validating the challenges they face in making decisions. Then, introduce decision-making tools, such as pros and cons lists, visualization exercises, or frameworks like the "5 Whys" method, to help them analyze options systematically. Encourage them to practice using these tools on smaller, low-stakes decisions first, building their confidence gradually. Explore alternative ways for them to approach decision-making, such as journaling their thoughts, setting intentions, or talking through decisions with a trusted peer.

In my opinion that only happens if the coach helps too much. We can’t help anybody – we can only inspire, support and assist. If we as coaches have that in mind from the beginning, that situation shouldn’t happen. If it happens despite that philosophy (or we didn’t do a good job at first), we should make them experience the amazing emotion coming from making decisions. Starting with small things, moving forward to bigger and more important decisions.

In coaching, it’s essential to guide clients toward self-reliance, as real growth happens when they develop confidence in their own decision-making. Start by creating awareness around it in a non-judgmental way. Ask exploratory questions: "What do you feel is holding you back from trusting your own judgment?” This opens a space for the client to explore any fears, insecurities, or patterns that contribute to their dependency. Shift the focus to help them uncover their own insights rather than offering direct solutions. By reflecting back on their answers, reinforce their ability to find solutions. Discuss tools/frameworks they can use to make future decisions independently, like identifying core values or developing a pros-and-cons list.

When a client leans on me for every decision, I like to steer them toward standing on their own two feet. Instead of handing out answers, I ask questions that get them thinking and figuring things out for themselves. I give them small decisions to tackle solo, building up their confidence bit by bit. Over time, they start trusting their instincts and finding their own way. It’s all about giving them the tools to be self-sufficient and helping them build that decision-making muscle so they’re ready to take things on without needing me at every step.
