There are certainly many ways, how to monitor the market. But there is one way, which works for me exceptionally well - attending exhibitions and conferences. Not only that you can talk, socialize and network with a huge number of people at the same time, but you can also absorb & feel the overall atmosphere. You recognize, how much are the people willing to spend to be visible, what efforts they make to create a footprint. You can simply feel if the pace is slowing down or if there is a jiggling spirit of excitement all over. And besides - you can collect a lot of valuable information and data by that occasion too!

I have found that sometimes we learn a new skill set, but unless we are put in a situation to use it, it does not solidify. This is why it's important to keep learning so you are prepared.

Learning new skills is really essential in whatever you do, not only business development. There is one factor, which I would like to point out though. One of the most influential ways is to make sure that there is a great diversity in skills and knowledges within the team. If people are motivated, the diversity in skills will inspire others with your strong skills, and at the same time, motivate you to learn and improve skills, which you still do not have. This is a sort of natural way, how to expand the knowledge and skill-set within the team. Of course, this shall go hand-in-hand with a learning scheme to identify the most important skills to be gained and trained.

But be careful - expansion is NOT adding people left and right without even thinking of it! Once you find a solid system, stick with it and build upon it. I see many people who start in BD trying different methods and never figure out how to troubleshoot. If you are working in a larger company, you may receive training on the systems and procedures they prefer you to use, but if you are working in a smaller company, it's up to your team to figure that out.

Being innovative is something what I call "ability to look behind the corner". Typically, there is a opportunity or goal, which you target. But before acting, take a look, whether the goal can′t be seen from a distance. This would then give you a greater picture and you realize that besides the commodity which you intend to promote, you can add special services, or approach the business with a partner and create an alliance which is worth for all the involved parties. In other words, when seeing a target, always check if the dimension is the ultimate one, or if the potential can be somehow expanded and increased.

Think big. Have a vision. Once you are able to forsee the distant future, it will help you to create a series of milestones, which are essential to reach the vision. Make sure that the milestones are achievable and realistic, otherwise you get lost and your team de-motivated. Going opposite way does not pay off, because if you reach smaller targets (milestones) without knowing what the vision is, you will end-up with ad-hoc planning and that might not bring you to the real destination, which you might have thought of.
