Balancing unique customization and scalability in Enterprise software: Are you ready to tackle the challenge?

Scale testing and Performance testing are but one side of the same coin that also includes Feature testing as the other. No software initiative can be deemed “done” until the Features, Performance and Scale of operations are completely tested. Performance and Scalability CANNOT be considered as an “after thought” when it comes to software development and are first class citizens themselves. Now, to this approach, add the Customization of software as a dimension and do the due diligence from that design perspective. This will make the Product eminently more customizable ( as in build a customization framework that utilizes custom configurations and so forth ) while it remains true to its nature on Performance and Scale.

To achieve the right balance between customization and scalability, the key is understanding your team. Typically, we seek short and medium-term benefits, but aspirations must be supported by human capital. Therefore, follow this strategy: First, understand the team's capacity for delivering business services. Then, categorize how much of this capacity includes specializations, high experience, or abilities to solve specific and complex business problems. Next, understand the standard implementation capacity and the cycle of talent renewal and loss. This analysis will set ambitious goals for team growth, meeting objectives, and delivering specializations that differentiate the business while providing a scalable line of services.

In strategic planning, the method that has allowed me to effectively identify the truly required and impactful functions for the business is through prototyping the most prioritized concepts proposed by the business. Keeping the design and implementation as simple as possible, and promptly delivering something for customers to interact with, we can then verify how the rest of the functionality gains traction or not. This approach helps in discarding unnecessary work and taking new and better paths. Feedback will determine whether an implementation requires customizations or complex routines that enhance the user experience or sacrifice scalability without limiting future growth.

To begin with modularization, there are recurring references such as the relationship between data, business functions or tasks, behaviors, or real-world representations that generate cohesion. However, something that only comes with experience is refining modularization through measurement in its use and maintenance. Let's use two examples to explain this. First, when we frequently need to modify a specific portion of a module, it is likely that this part can function as an independent component. Second, when teams consistently maintain mutually exclusive parts of the component and face unnecessary conflicts from a CI/CD perspective.
