Some probing questions are: What are the agreed scenarios of unit and integration tests based on business value? Are they covered with quality gates? What area of exploratory testing should we focus on? What do we know about the health of our services? (Monitoring/observation) What else do we need to know to give us the confidence to deploy our software? How quickly can we respond to a change?

To avoid this, prioritize the most critical areas of the application for testing, ensuring that key functionalities are thoroughly tested while less critical areas may receive lighter coverage. As much as you can, automate, test frequently, and seek feedback on your work should all be prioritized. Qualitative and speed don't have to conflict. Although it takes careful planning, execution, and communication, it is possible to provide high-quality software quickly.

In my opinion, TDD is a myth for most Agile projects because sprint planning normally has QA as the last line of defense with no/ very little time to develop test-cases where is dev mostly fluid. There is no single cookie-cutter solution but having all three main pillars (Scope/ Time and Resources) balanced with a constant check during sprint retrospective could give better results with limited risk. One has to go through the functionality at least once before leaning towards automation as it only covers regression. Example being - New features/ hot-fixes does not provide much flexibility for QA team and they end up as canary in the tunnel.

Risk assessment plays a vital role in balancing thorough test coverage with timely delivery. By analyzing the potential risks tied to each feature or update, you can strategically focus testing on the areas that demand the most attention. This approach doesn't involve neglecting lower-risk areas but rather understanding where comprehensive testing is essential and where a more streamlined approach might suffice. Engage your team in pinpointing high-risk areas at the start of each sprint, ensuring that QA efforts are targeted effectively while keeping the project on schedule.

Team dynamics are essential in achieving a balance between quality and speed. Having a product owner and dev lead who can lean on out of the box approaches like A/B testing, out-sourcing, code coverage, white-labeling, use of proven open-source solutions, solid CI-CD pipe-line and finally be able to deliver a cost effective solution with lean teams help. One may disagree but coder and QA mostly compliment each-other only when they share the same goal and same sense of urgency. Long story short, effective use of tools (eg.: Defect logging, test result reports, flagging risks and not only crunching numbers etc.) completes the communication and trust issues cause win-win situation for the overall product.

Continuous learning reminds be of very good improvisation done a company (on the pretext of interview) from Stockholm, got me to provide comprehensive QA insights, free of cost (guess which comp :) ).
