One thing I have found helpful is the general knowledge of how each test procedure operates. For example in settings where resources are limited and the laboratory equipment is semi automated, Urea and Creatinine test can be analysed simultaneously, after all the pipetting, while urea is incubating, creatinine can be analysed immediately as it needs no incubation and urea can be aspirated when the incubation time is up. Another example can be seen in testing Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate when you have other tasks to perform, ESR last for 1 hour, therefore before the one hour is up there is more that can be done.

Even when it isn’t possible to automate tasks the one thing everyone can and should do to help streamline their processes is to write everything down. This is especially true in academic labs that often lack the resources necessary to automate wet lab tasks. Have a draft protocol and then refine it based on changes or adjustments you make while troubleshooting the experiment (and don’t forget to record those adjustments as well!) This is the most fundamental way you can streamline experimental processes, and going beyond that, keeping your protocols in writing is of course also essential for ensuring maximum replicability.

Batching of work can never be over emphasized. Undertaking the tasks in bit size will minimise the psychological overwhelming feeling when approached by an avalanche of amount of work. Also, by noting the average amount of time taken to perform a task, the time it will take to perform the whole tasks before can be gotten, which will prepare the mind of the Lab staff there ensuring that accuracy is maintained because there will be no need to rush.

In a large commercial laboratory, there may hundreds of different tests being performed. As such no single analyst can remember all the process steps for the tests. Of course employees can refer to the process steps on manuals or electronic devices, but a test wise self QC checklist will be of great benefit. The self QC checklist should mention about the reagents, equipments and instrument calibration required before the start of the test. It should then highlight any key process step that can cause errors. It should aid the analyst on how to report the findings. But most importantly it should have an option for the analyst to enter the details why the test failed & it should be discussed in the next team meeting for the benefit of all.

Quality Control (QC) does not have to be a painful process and rather than being seen as a hinderance should be the exact opposite. It allows for confidence when delivering the results and in most cases speed up the process of analysis and reporting. This includes when multiple people could be working on one report (shift work). QC can provide the consistency required for such workforce structures. It is a blessing during times of heavy workloads and tight deadlines so do not make it the first thing to cut to complete the analysis.

Na minha experiência em bioquímica clínica, o imprescindível era iniciar a jornada de trabalha passando todos os controles das máquinas, calibrando e conferindo a quantidade dos reagentes, e fazendo as devidas trocas. Isso tudo facilitava a jornada de trabalho toda, e agilizava todos os processos, pois já estávamos pautadas no controle de qualidade do processo.

High work load, and so on, does not mean quality control will be over looked. In many instances, when there is high work load, the equipment is recalibrated after the initial calibration. Also, the through put of equipment is noted to ensure that quality results are generated.

High work load often times come when there are natural disasters, epidemic, pandemic accidents, therefore effective communication on the way to attend to the high work load among colleagues is paramount. All hands ought to be on deck to ensure quality is maintained even the face of high workload as a result of disasters.

Productivity planners and apps are a real help with this. I like to start the day by making a to-do list, noting how long each task is likely to take and how urgent it is. After balancing the time required against how high to prioritize each task, I decide which should be done in the morning, afternoon, and evening. I then transfer those items to a daily planner. It’s also important to keep in mind which experiments will have a lot of downtime that can be used to complete other tasks. If I’m going to be staining samples, for instance, I can use the hour or so that the samples are on the shaker to write or analyze data. This is the rare case where I feel it’s “safe” to multitask.

Laboratory personnel should be able to multitask easily and still maintain quality, I therefore disagree that there should be no multitasking. I believe that anyone who cannot multitask should not be in the Lab, as that person can easily make mistakes. In the laboratory we use timers, therefore, the reminder is a veritable tool to help us multitask. As I agree specific block of time should be given for different tasks, we should be able to do more than one thing per time in a stratified manner.
