Before you are able to negotiate with multiple providers you actually need to be able to *work* with multiple providers. Many companies cut themselves off from a large provider pool by e.g. insisting on just 1 or 2 (IT) messaging standards to transmit transport orders and / or to consume shipment updates. At a very large retailer we took a different approach: Configuring the shipping system to work with basic "messaging" like excel and WhatsApp which enabled us to onboard small providers and, consequently, we had a huge choice. Result: > Many small providers who were super eager to work for us delivering excellent performance. > Often cheaper than large providers as the small ones don't have massive overheads for e.g. marketing etc.
