In a team with Controls Engineers and Software Engineers, lines get blurred. I haven't known many "software" engineers to be willing to pickup ladder logic, or anything other than a text based language. The Controls Engineer is an enigma, because they are generally versed in enough of everything to get the job done, but not as in depth to the efficiency and structure of code. All that being said, the software developer is probably going to be handling the frontend, like Ignition, that's more web based. The controls engineer will handle the PLC, the logic, the equipment, the hardware, the interconnections, the network, etc. Software engineers in an industrial environment need to support the controls engineer, ultimately.
