This is actually a really great question! I don't want to tell anyone how they must engage, but I do have some pretty strong feelings about this. Feedback is incredibly difficult to give to one's superiors. This makes it almost always biased and skewered toward the positive, as it is the only way that most people feel comfortable at the conclusion of the conversation. Therefore, how do we do this? We pretty much ignore the positive feedback, knowing that it is unlikely to be as authentic. Alternatively, we take the negative feedback and magnify it by at least 10x because it is highly unlikely that they were able to say everything they wanted.

Stay Open-Minded: Embrace diverse perspectives, recognizing that differing opinions can offer valuable insights for growth and Seek Specific Examples: Engage with those providing feedback to gather concrete instances of both positive and negative experiences.

"Embrace Feedback as a Leadership Compass!" Conflicting feedback on your leadership style can feel like a tug-of-war, but it’s also a powerful guide for growth. Start by identifying patterns—are there common themes that reveal areas to strengthen? Then, consider the context of each piece of feedback, remembering that different situations may call for flexibility in style. Adapt where it aligns with your values, and communicate openly with your team about your evolution. Balancing varied insights shows adaptability, and when your team sees you listening, they’ll feel empowered to grow alongside you.

I transitioned into a director role, I quickly realized that my leadership expectations were creating tension within my new team. Having come from a high-performing environment, I initially set standards that didn’t match their current skill set, leading to some resentment. I pivoted my approach, shifting from expecting immediate results to gradually developing their leadership skills. I assigned tasks thoughtfully, encouraged input, and emphasized a supportive, growth-focused mindset. By fostering collaboration and welcoming feedback, I saw my team’s confidence and capabilities grow, as they felt increasingly valued and empowered. Balancing my approach taught me that meeting teams where they are is essential for long-term progress.
