This is a dilemma which many colleagues who have actively participated in academic advising will have encountered. Open and honest communication with advisees is critical. Rather than just handing them a plan, it is important to communicate the reasons for the advising with them. There are many factors which shape the advice that a student receives. University policy, workload policy, pre-requisites, course offerings, program structure, seat availability, at-risk students are just some of the dynamics that shape the advising plan. Sharing the wider picture and student having a Birds Eye view of the plan will help to appease the students and build trust in the advisor.

Are you and your academic advisor butting heads over course selections? You're not alone. It can feel frustrating when your interests and your advisor's recommendations don’t align. Advisors often have a broader view of what's required for your academic progress, while you're focusing on your passions and long-term goals. The key is open communication—express your aspirations clearly, and ask why they’re suggesting a particular course. Understanding each other's perspectives can help you find a middle ground that supports both your academic success and personal growth. Collaboration is the way forward.
