You should NOT have any references listed on your resume. It's not a current thing, nor is "References available upon request." Your reference list should be a separate document to provide when requested after an offer is made "pending a reference check." Don't give it out prematurely so folks go shopping for another potential candidate! There is enough competition out there!

Providing a reference is a service. Good manners dictate that we remain in contact with the person doing us this favor—enough to stay informed of any changes to their contact details. Furthermore, I believe naming a reference who might be contacted without their knowledge or understanding of the context should be avoided. My advice is to provide references by mentioning their position and the nature of the relationship, but without sharing their full name or contact information.

To keep your resume current, regularly check with your references to confirm their contact information and willingness to be listed. Update their details promptly if they change roles or contact methods. Always tailor your resume to match the specific job application, ensuring the references align. P.S. Staying proactive with updates shows professionalism and respect!

Firstly, adding references to a resume is an old practice. You'll need to have a reference list ready when asked. Make sure you have updated references.

In my opinion references and their contact details shouldn't be included on your resume at all - they should be maintained in a separate document and provided only when requested. This approach is more professional, protects your references' privacy, and gives you a chance to personally inform them when they might be contacted. It also saves valuable resume space for your achievements and qualifications.
