Chuck it in the bin. Anything written in it shouldn’t be new news to you. If it all comes down to a one off performance review then your manager is not doing their job and you are not receiving adequate feedback, opportunity or direction and mentoring. Focus on the goals and strategies for delivery for your next tasks. Discuss with peers and your manager. Past performance is no indication or guarantee of future success.

Evaluation in the corporate world is a waste of time, The project you do, the task you perform, and the project result are unrelated. the performance rating should be like a heartbeat there should be movement :) Then comes how you are rating the person on what basis. Since most of the corporate world looks and hiring skill sets that means he/she is hired to perform a set of tasks defined for them. so with whom are you comparing them and rating them? So in my perception feedback should be with a solution not to tell them what went wrong, the performance rating review should be with what action we should take as a team for an individual. So our mission should be "Let's grow and let grow" so we continue to keep the talent.

Performance Evaluations gives one an opportunity to reflect on the achievements and area of opportunities from the previous quarter/ year etc. A performance evaluation has always 2 parts i.e Self Evaluation and Direct Managers evaluation. It is important to pay attention and understand , if you and your manager are aligned wrt to your contributions and impact on the team. If there is a difference , then it is important to understand the reason and ask your manager to provide specific feedback so it could be worked on. Performance conversations, providing feedback , soliciting feedback etc. should not be a just a one off yearly thing but a regular 1x1 conversation between a team member and their manager to be truly effective.

One of the effective ways in my experience us to set goals in phases. 1. Set a long term goal which can be achieved in an year. 2. Break the components of it in half yearly, quarterly and monthly time frame. 3. Further breaking it into weeks for the goal decided for the particular month, and then that to a daily for 1 week is the simplest way to March forward without hassle and achieve it. In short, consistency and discipline is what really matters to achieve with a really smart and easy to adapt planning.

My end of year evaluation was booked for the last day of the financial year and I prepared for it as I always had done. I walked in to the room and was told that after 7 years I was being made redundant. There was no budget for my role for the next financial year. I’d gathered 360 feedback as usual; I’d had a bumper year of projects and contributions. I had around 40 detailed feedback evaluations from colleagues. I dusted off my CV and loaded all my feedback in to a word cloud software. It was an inspiring and confidence boosting visual representation of my skills, personal attributes and development areas. I sent it out with my CV and secured my next role within 2 weeks. Feedback is a gift, what you do with it is entirely up to you.

Keep learning. It is axiomatic that in today’s world and the current trends, I bring it to IT industry, if you dont learn new emerging technologies, one cannot survive. AI is changing many equations. Sooner or later, many roles will be removed from the list as AI can perform it. Getting more challenging to learn new technologies, it is becoming exciting to learn them.
