You’ve just graduated with an education degree. How can you use it to launch a successful career?

Personally, I wish I would not have waited so long to go back to get my masters degree (10 years in between). Additionally, I just started a PhD program and again I wish I would not have waited another 12 years. So, I suggest getting a job to get some experience but start working towards your next degree, asap. One thing I learned throughout my 25 years in Education is to always have a 10 year plan. With each milestone you achieve, revise the plan and work towards making it happen. Work hard, get involved, and contribute to the success of the school, and you will get noticed and rewarded. No matter how long it takes to get to that next milestone, keep your head up, stay focused, and think outside the box when it comes to jobs.

First, decide what success is for you. If your goals are around helping individual students succeed, find a school that prioritizes data and jump in. If you are looking to expand your reach to the entire school or district, volunteer to help chaperone, coordinate state testing, and participate on councils to get leadership hours to advance to an administrative degree. If your purpose lies in your field, get involved in professional organizations by presenting at conferences and volunteering on their boards. Each of these area may guide you to a different type of school: charter, urban, private, etc. Once you've worked in the field long enough to be sure it's your calling, get your masters to both increase salary and options.

Begin exploring options well before you graduate! Find opportunities to connect with local school districts and get involved in the classroom early. Volunteer at school events, attend board meetings, and get to know teachers and families.

With an education degree, one can consider completing internships, volunteer work, or part-time jobs in educational settings to gain practical experience. This could involve assisting teachers in classrooms, tutoring students, or working with educational organizations. Build relationships with professionals in the field, as this could lead to job opportunities, mentorship, and valuable insights into the education industry. Be open to different career paths within education; there are various roles you can explore, such as curriculum development, educational administration, or education consulting.

The audience for your resume will be made up of not only humans but also machines, keep this in mind and pick a template that is machine readable.

Build your resume with experiences while you are in school. Do not wait until you graduate. Be purposeful in gaining experiences which will help you both in securing a role and in being equipped to fulfill it.

Updating your resume involves several steps. You need to review your current resume, identify areas for improvement, remove outdated information, and consider updating its formatting, layout and presentation to accurately reflect your education, abilities, experience, and accomplishments.

As you design your resume, be sure to highlight you philosophy, educational experiences, information on licensing/certification, student teaching experience (if applicable), and volunteer experiences. Research templates for your resume so that your final product is visually appealing. You may want to check out free templates on Adobe or Canva. Also, have a trusted mentor or colleague review your draft prior to submission to prospective employers.

Think of a store that sells a product. Factors that decide if a customer will buy something from them are quality, price, trust factor, etc., but would you even open the door to enter the store if it appears poorly maintained from the outside? That won't give you the confidence to even walk into it, let alone pay money to buy something from them, right? Your resume is exactly that - a sneak peek into your attitude, dedication, and work ethic. Avoid grammatical, spelling, syntactic, and other mistakes. Updating your resume with your most recent qualifications and experiences allows potential recruiters to understand your offerings better. Remember, a resume will not get you the job, but if careless, it can ensure you will not get the job!

Start building your portfolio your first year of college. When you have choices for tasks, consider topics and projects which will enhance your portfolio. As you move toward your final year of school, become purposeful in filling in any gaps and creating items in areas in which your portfolio is week.

Be flexible. Understand you’re likely not going to stay at your first school your entire career and that’s OKAY! Instead, find a place you’re passionate about that you believe in their mission and values even if it means taking a position less than what you think you ‘deserve’, its more important you get your foot in the door so they can see what you’re made of

Hope, really hope the subjects the state has certified you as qualified to teach are in high demand. Not just subjects you like but subjects in demand AND you like. You must identify school districts that pay and pay well. And as a new teacher don't start to think you and your first school district have a marriage going on. Big mistake. Always keep in mind you're following the dollar, the district with a strong union and generous pay package should always be in your sights. Never think you've found a home. Finally, as soon as you've started teaching, enroll in a graduate program. Each year you fail to complete a master's degree, you lose money big time. You are doing something you enjoy: do it for the best pay.

First, understand you may not get the exact job you want the first time. Instead, get into a school, organization, etc. that you can envision yourself in their culture. Culture is everything. Working in education is really hard. If you’re working with administrators that truly care, value you and will support your growth you’ll get into that position you desired from the onset. You’ve got this!

Ask your three most skilled, knowledgeable professionals to write a letter of recommendation for you after you have graduated. Prepare a letter of application for the type of position you anticipate seeking. Refine the letter as you gain experience and success. Capture video that documents your success. Use ideas from the National Board Certification program.

To prepare for interviews, research the organisation, practice responses, and confidently present skills, experiences, and achievements. Do not forget to dress appropriately, arrive early, bring resumes, and prepare intelligent interview questions reflecting interest and engagement.

Celebrating your achievements not only marks milestones but also fuels motivation for future endeavors. It's a tangible way to acknowledge the effort and dedication you've invested in your education and career. This celebration can be as simple as a dinner with loved ones or a small personal indulgence. Remember, each achievement paves the way for the next challenge, setting a foundation of continuous improvement and resilience. Furthermore, sharing your successes can inspire others in your network, fostering a supportive community that values growth and accomplishment.
