You’ve found a bug in your software. How do you know if it’s a real problem?

We need to check if Bug is reproducible and also we need to asses the impact of bug. If bug is reproducible then Bug is real and also we need to check the condition in which bug is identified in the system.

We could identify the bugs in may ways during testing phase. 1. Compare the actual result with expected result 2. Verifying the front end functionality if it is a UI interface and compare with the requirement document and UI/UX design 3. Review the flow diagram and understand the process 4. Verify the existing functionality and the new change that impacted and identified as a bug performing Regression testing 5. As QA, we can identify the bug in detail by checking the logs in the backend and find the root cause and any integration issues. 6. Always communicate with the business users, BA and dev and raise the defect with the sufficient details such as videos, screenshots, steps to reproduce, test environment, version, pirority etc.

To determine if a bug is a real problem, assess its impact on the software's functionality, user experience, and overall performance. Verify if the bug occurs consistently, replicating it under various conditions to understand its scope and severity accurately.

In my point of view, it will be a bug if the system behavior does not correspond to the requirements raised in the documentation, refinements of each sprint, the recording can be through prints, videos or some other way that can be recorded, the tests can be carried out in exploratory way or not, in order to identify unexpected system behaviors.

Initiating the bug identification process begins with a precise and thorough understanding of the issue. Clearly define the anticipated software behavior and contrast it with the observed actual behavior. Investigate the frequency and specific conditions under which the bug manifests—determining whether it occurs consistently or randomly. Document the bug comprehensively, including a detailed description, screenshots, logs, and step-by-step instructions for reproduction, along with any pertinent information. This meticulous documentation serves the dual purpose of effective communication with stakeholders and provides a basis for later verification of bug resolution.

Standardizing bug classification is essential, particularly in large or multi-team environments, to ensure alignment among stakeholders. By establishing agreed-upon criteria for categorizing bugs, teams can better prioritize and manage them effectively. For instance, if a bug is classified as 'very urgent,' all relevant team members will understand the criticality and prioritize its resolution accordingly. Conversely, if a bug is deemed less severe, resources can be allocated appropriately, preventing unnecessary disruptions to other project tasks.

Bug classification relies on Priority and Severity. Priority is how quickly a bug needs to be fixed. Severity is level of impact the bug has on the application in terms of functionality, performance, usage etc. Example: A bug that causes the application to crash when a user tries to log in would be considered a high-severity bug. Frequency: The frequency of occurrence of a bug can also influence its priority. Bugs that occur frequently or affect a large number of users may be prioritized higher. Example: A bug that causes a key feature of the software to fail for 50% of users would be considered high priority, even if its impact is not critical.

As soon as the bug is identified, it is important to understand the bug completely, including its reproducibility, its impact, its complexity, its root cause and possible solutions. It is important assessing the bug and discussing it with the team, collecting valuable insight and if it can be source for more critical issues. There are other factors that also have to be taken in consideration for instance if the bug requires code change, configuration update or a more reliable workaround. Based on the complete analysis by the team and possibility of resolving the issue in accordance with its severity, impact and urgency. By considering all the variables can only a bug be identified if it’s a critical issue or a real problem for the project.

Reporting bugs in QA is vital for quality improvement, efficient communication, and risk mitigation. It guides prioritization, documents software issues for future reference, and contributes to a positive user experience. Early bug identification supports informed decision-making, fosters continuous improvement, and helps prevent issues post-release.

Verifying bugs in QA is essential for ensuring that reported issues have been effectively addressed. It confirms the success of bug fixes, maintains software integrity, and prevents the reoccurrence of resolved issues. Verification is integral to delivering a reliable product, meeting user expectations, and building trust in the software's quality.

A QA can learn from the bug as this will continiously improve the testing performance and gain experience on the functionality by troubleshooting the logs and identifying the root cause analysis in may ways. This will improve your knowledge in the current domain and provide accurate test reports to the stakeholders and the project team members. It is good to maintain and document the lessons learnt from each sprint retrospective.

Learning from the bug is very important to add to the continuous improvement of the quality of software. Over a period of time lessons learned from bugs can help QAs in effective refining of requirement and help prevent similar bugs to be introduced.

I would like to add that after verifying a bug, it's crucial to prioritize it based on its impact on the system, its severity, and the resources available for fixing it. Not all bugs will be addressed immediately; some may require quick fixes, while others might be scheduled for future sprints. Effective bug management involves deciding which bugs to fix first and which can wait, considering factors such as user impact, the complexity of the fix, and overall project timelines. This step ensures that the team focuses on critical issues that affect the system's functionality and user experience, ensuring efficient use of resources and timely resolutions.

From my perspective, depending on your product, first and most important factor should be to check if the bug is reproduced or not and on top of that how critical is the bug. These should be the deciding factors to declare the bud to be a real problem or not.

The bug is "by design", an unexpected behavior or result of the system. It may also depend on how different users are using the system and what their assumptions are. The simple fact that we identified this behavior or result as a bug, means that something wasn't working as expected by the user. Hence, even if this is not a bug per say, because the product is indeed supposed to work this way, this does not mean we need to ignore it : it's becoming an improvement.

While testing if the output is not according to the expected requirement means something is wrong. Check the requirements to confirm the bug. Also try to reproduce it consistently and find the root cause to narrow it down like if is due to some configuration set up etc. Then find out the risks associated and classify the impact accordingly and report the issue. Collaborate with devs to help them reproduce if required. After fix verify it and also do a sanity and regression testing associated with it.

Few things to consider - Few bugs can be intermittent, non-reproducible these need to be investigated thoroughly to understand the root cause if it is code, test data Or any others. Otherwise similar situation occurs in Production might have huge cost.
