Not all catches are worth keeping. Sometimes you gotta toss them back into the lake and wait for a better one. Promotions for the sake of promotions don’t always benefit you. It’s important to look at how the promotion will affect your work and personal lives. Is the promotion in line with your career goals? Also evaluate how the “catch” benefits the company. If there’s a mismatch, perhaps it’s not the right promotion.

Assess who you'll be working with, who you'll be reporting to, and whether that leader / manager is going to be a great mentor or coach for you moving forward. No job is perfect, each have their own 'catch' regardless of how awesome the job is. The trick is to assess whether you are going to learn, grow and evolve significantly in that role. In my experience, you can achieve 5 years worth of personal and professional development within a single year of working for the right team and manager whereas a poor team environment and toxic manager can set you back years. If it's a great team and a great leader, I would negotiate professional mentorship and coaching from that leader or manager as part of the role to mitigate 'the catch'.

A promotion is, in theory, an acknowledgement of merits. If the catch is more hours and no salary increase, then it should be considered a demotion. Nonetheless, and depending on the circumstances, can you get more personal time, other benefits (health insurance, discounts, etc.)? Is a raise expected further down the line? The experience you'll get from this position can also help to boost your profile/resume for a potential job search.
