You’re working with a team member who doesn’t know UI design. How can you make sure they don’t slow you down?

First you have to arouse interest in your team member. Without interest UI will be only colors and fonts for him/her. Communicate and educate. Find common language with them. Show basic principles as layout, colors, typography. Explore new trends together. Sharing knowledge is the way to develop not only your team member but also will be good for you.

I’ve found that pairing on work can provide a great platform for new team members to learn and grow confidence whilst minimising time lose on a project. Additionally, I’d ensure that any time line factors in team experience and capability from the start. I’ve commonly used relative sizing to ensure the team feels comfortable with workloads and don’t feel over burdened.

From experience, I’ve found Figma’s shared libraries very effective for creating simple mock-ups. Their common components feature also allows more mature teams to create custom style guides that can be invaluable when tight deadlines arise.

I would provide clear guidance and resources tailored to their level of experience. This will also include training sessions either one-on-one or from other sources, providing templates/materias, and encouraging open communication to address any questions or challenges promptly. Additionally, delegating tasks based on their strengths and expertise can help avoid slow down.
