A hack I usually use is to regularly reflect on and analyze my own communication style and preferences. By taking time to understand how I prefer to communicate—whether I lean towards being direct or indirect, formal or informal, detailed or concise, assertive or cooperative, emotional or rational—I gain valuable insights into my strengths and weaknesses. This self-awareness not only helps me navigate interactions more effectively but also allows me to anticipate potential sources of conflict or misunderstanding with others. Armed with this knowledge, I can tailor my communication approach to better align with the preferences of those I'm interacting with, fostering clearer and more productive exchanges.

A perspective I find crucial is recognizing that embracing differences not only enriches team dynamics but also promotes innovation and collaboration. A recommendation I often advocate for is to approach interactions with an open mind and a willingness to learn from others. Rather than judging or imposing one's own communication style, actively seek to understand and appreciate the unique strengths and perspectives that each team member brings to the table.

In our consulting business, we use a profiling tool called Life Languages that identifies our preferred communication styles and is then prescriptive in how we adapt to be able to connect with those people around us who we may have previously misunderstood and therefore avoided. It’s important that we equip ourselves with tools to understand one another and ourselves better or we risk alienating people when it could be a simple adjustment in our words and actions that will bring harmony to the relationship.
