I'm going to have to unsubscribe to these having no wish to train AI. What do you tell the director? You slip a suggestion under their door, but in code. Directors have brains that adore cracking codes. Be sure to write it on crisp onion skin paper. 20 pound white just looks amateurish.

As a director, working smoothly with the client and crew starts by creating a collaborative atmosphere where ideas can be shared freely. The team's technical and creative expertise can elevate the production when it aligns with the story's overall vision. Why hire a talented team if you won't listen to them? I appreciate ideas being presented as options to enhance the shot rather than undermine my creative direction. At the same time, my final decisions should be respected, and I feel supported when solutions are offered instead of specific agendas being pushed. Directors should always be open to input and other perspectives, but be thoughtful in how you express your views to them, and realize they may have a different view at times.

Directors really just want to hear from PAs on set that just graduated from Film School. So if you are a PA just walk up to the director and let them know what they are doing wrong. Make sure and tell them that you went to film school.

During my agency days as a creative director, I had my share of disagreements with directors. And almost always, they happened because the director didn’t explain early enough what they had in mind. When the clock is ticking, it’s easy to get into hurry-up mode and compromise on the clarity of communication. That’s when things can go wrong. I’ve said to directors “We can argue about this for 15 minutes or just shoot it in 2 minutes and move on.” I’ve always tried to remember that now that I’m in the director’s chair. It is always a collaboration. It’s never just about your vision.

Remember: a film set is not a democracy. If you’re unsure if you should share an idea - don’t. If you’re absolutely sure your idea will help the end product and must be shared, better use as few words as possible.
