5 Optimize your joins

While joins are a powerful feature of SQL, a lot of practice is required to fully master them. Usually they work faster than sub-queries but sometimes, if not used carefully, they can slow down a query significantly. If a small number of columns from a table are required to be joined, then only those columns should be joined through sub-query instead of joining full table with another table. Being more specific with the columns on which tables are joined can also be quite helpful i.e. using two or more columns with 'ON' will further filter out the table which we are joining. INNER join should always be the first priority if it achieves the result we want because it selects only those records which are present in both tables.

Some best practices that might help: 1. Avoid excessive use of wildcard characters (e.g., % and _) in queries since they can slow down performance by scanning entire tables. 2. Create indexes on frequently used columns (e.g., in WHERE, JOIN, and ORDER BY clauses). Be careful however, since you need to maintain a balance between read and write performance. 3. Avoid the use of subqueries. Prefer JOINS whenever possible. 4. In your SELECT statements, select specific columns instead of everything (*).
