In my experience, Getting creative can really jazz up quality management. It's not just about following the same old rules—it's about thinking outside the box to make things better. When you let your creative juices flow, you can come up with all sorts of cool ideas to make customers happier, get things done faster, save some cash, and come up with new stuff. Plus, getting everyone in on the creativity train can make work more fun, get folks pumped up, and bring people together to share ideas and try new things. So, don't be afraid to get a little wild with your quality management—being creative can lead to all sorts of good stuff.

Incorporating creativity into quality management faces challenges including resistance to change, subjective measurement, risk aversion, cultural shift difficulties, skill gaps, integration with standards, resource allocation issues, communication challenges, time constraints, and sustainability concerns. Addressing these challenges requires strategic planning, effective communication, and commitment to fostering a culture that values both creativity and quality management principles.

The fact that "Being Creative" itself means not sticking to a beaten track. Challenges you are likely to face are - 1. This is not how we were doing! 2. Why change something which is working well? 3. Its not my idea! Yours! 4. If it works, it is OURS! Else, it is YOURS!! 5. In this company, this will not work! and many more.

Adding creativity to quality management can be tricky because there are a bunch of things that can get in the way. For example, if the way things are done is old-fashioned or too strict, it's hard to try new stuff. Plus, if everyone's all about following rules and being in control, there's less room for taking risks and trying new things. And not having enough time, money, or support for creative stuff can be tough. On top of that, some folks just don't like change, and they might not be open to new ideas. And let's not forget about being scared of failing or getting criticized—that can really stop you from being creative. So, while adding creativity to quality management can be great, it's not always easy because of these barriers.

I try to explain an example which I encountered in my career in Quality Management, which is: Resistance to Change In a quality management team, there is resistance to adopting new quality improvement methodologies, such as Six Sigma or Lean, due to employees being comfortable with existing processes. This resistance hinders creativity as team members are hesitant to explore new approaches, limiting innovation and potential improvements in quality management practices. Also, due to limited resources (manpower) , whereby each person already have packed schedule on their daily tasks, then we foresee it is hard to allocate extra time for lean and six sigma projects. I too encountered barriers in bringing creativity in quality management due to the resistance to change. The feeling of quality functions as a "Burden" in the struggle to achieve numbers, is where creativity is killed in the first instance. It was a holistic approach through participation and ideation from the "roots to the top" which improved the positive response to creativity in Quality.

Actually I agree with the point on rigid procedures limiting flexibility and autonomy. It's about what this and that guideline says and then onto implementing without much thought on how creativity can be incorporated in the application process. It really demands a curious mindset and not a fixed one to get creative muscle working in the QM environment

Anytime anyone will try to bring creative and new ideas in the way things are done in quality, one may experience push back and resistance. People get used to the ways of working and want to avoid adapting to new ways of working and learning new things. This is where a mangers relationship with their team will play an important role in introducing the new ideas or methods.

If you want your quality management team to get creative, there are a few things you can do. First off, take a look at how things are done and see if there's a way to make them more flexible and open to new ideas. It's also important to find a balance between hitting your quality goals and leaving room for creativity. Give your team the time, space, and tools they need to come up with cool ideas and try them out. And don't forget to ask them—and your customers—what they think and listen to what they have to say. When someone comes up with a great idea, make sure to give them a pat on the back. And remember, whether things go right or wrong, there's always something to learn from it—so celebrate those successes and learn from those failures.

To overcome barriers of resistance of change in implementing a lean and six sigma projects due to limited resources (man power), we can try to : 1) Communicate the Benefits: Clearly communicate the benefits of adopting new quality improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma or Lean. Highlight how these approaches can lead to improved efficiency & higher quality products. 2) Prioritize and Allocate Resources Wisely: Prioritize lean and Six Sigma projects based on their potential impact on quality improvement and strategic objectives. We should allocate resources, including manpower, time, and budget, strategically to support these projects. We should consider adjusting schedules to free up time for dedicated project work. Promote a supportive culture: Create a safe and inclusive environment where individuals feel comfortable sharing their ideas. 3. Provide training and resources: Offer training programs, workshops, and access to tools and resources that support creative thinking & problem-solving. 4. Encourage collaboration and diverse perspectives: Foster a culture of collaboration that brings together individuals with diverse backgrounds, skills. 5. Set aside time for creativity: Allocate dedicated time for brainstorming, idea generation, & experimentation to encourage creative thinking.

Changes are inevitable in fast growing business. We need to review and revisit the things we do in QM to keep the team compatible with fast changing agile world. Sometimes failure may occur, so it always best to have more that one plan ( if else) if the new change has more difficulty than the existing model there is no harm in going back to old model. We Crack through success only when we try. So if you less success in some perspectives try to invest and involve in portions than in whole framework so it is not gonna affect the entire process of work.

One common tool that can enhance creativity in quality management is the "Brainstorming Session." In a manufacturing company's quality department, the team faces challenges with product defects and inefficiencies in the production process. To address these issues and foster creativity, we conduct a brainstorming session. We blend some tools like fish bone diagram, pareto charts, and other 7 QC tools to facilitate our brainstorming. After that we further data collection to prove the situation to gather all the facts and figures to help us make a better decision. How about your workplace's practice? Regarding incorporation of creativity, the main challenge I have faced is the 'time' required to 1. find 2. implement 3. get result My suggestion would be to keep doing some other traditional works side by side to buy the time till measurable output is achieved!

By managing creative ideas through a structured framework like DMAIC or PDCA, businesses can optimize solutions without jeopardizing quality.

Use the ‘pilot approach’: Implement a creative ‘minimum viable solution’, where the impact of a failure is low, where you can learn fast, and where you get quick results on if it works as intended. Then continuously and creatively improve it or, if necessary, discard it.
