You’re training for a career in software development. What skills do you need to learn first?

With the introduction of Agile concept developers are reqired to deliver in sprints. So According to me the most important skillsare i) Critical thinking ii)How to incorporate Security in Design also known as Secure Software development. iii) Integrated end to end testing and not just the module as the module or part which is being delivered as part of current sprint may functional correctly individually but when integrated the whole program may fail. iv) Use Case scenarios - Programmer should where possible provide comments on what the code is trying to achieve. This helps the debugger to debug faster. v) Proper Version control and backups for rollbacks if required. vi) How to secure the code offline after every sucessful change.

For a career in software development, mastering foundational skills is crucial. Begin with programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, as they are widely used across various domains. Familiarize yourself with version control systems like Git and learn about data structures and algorithms for efficient problem-solving. Understanding databases and SQL is essential for handling data, while web development skills including HTML, CSS, and frameworks like React or Angular are valuable for creating user-friendly interfaces. Finally, prioritize continuous learning, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities, as they are fundamental in the ever-evolving tech landscape.

Any software available in the market is composed of a programming language. The programming language serves as the fundamental building block of the software. Without a programming language, it's nearly impossible to develop software. The first step in software development is to learn the appropriate language. The choice of which language to master depends on various factors such as interest, market trends, etc. Initially, one should become proficient in at least one programming language. Over time, it is beneficial to learn about other languages as well. To improve the command on the language you should make at least one larger project on this language.

If I should start again I will first go for a programming language like JavaScript, Java, python and so on just pick one out this languages and understand it in depth. Once you get one the rest is the case.

The very first thing related to the programming language: we should know what are applications of language, where can be used. Accordingly we need to choose a programming language.

For efficient software development, data structures are key. Programs are comprised of data structures and algorithms, and software is created through the integration of different programs. Therefore, learning data structures and applying their concepts to software development is a necessary step in the development process. Simply learning data structures is not sufficient; one must also possess the ability to apply data structures and algorithms to solve complex problems.

- Critical Thinking - An attitude to learn/unlearn/relearn things. - Soft skills where you can glean information from the problem domain and translate them into a working computer program. - There is always a need to understand the basics/foundation just like any other profession and in CS this foundation means problem solving skills, data structures and algorithms. - A good to have skill is the ability to switch between a tree-view and a jungle-view when solving a particular problem i.e. keeping the context of things in mind.

I think that the training of a software developer requires the development of the following skills or competencies: .- Abstraction capacity .- Analysis capacity .- Synthesis capacity The above is essential to form systematization skills, which is key in process automation. Initiating programming activities is required to learn to think in the way that is needed to build algorithms and design data structures. Learning to program is an iterative and evolutionary process.

From my experience at Siemens EDA as a software engineer, there's an important truth you need to understand about software design principles before jumping into practice. You need to understand that software design principles originally stem from logic & philosophy. These are the ideas that the software communities agree upon after millions of attempts at creating better software. Such ideas are very likely to be flexible & generalizable. Take for example the "Single Responsibility Principle" in OOP. This doesn't just apply best to methods, classes & modules. Feel free to use them on a grander scale during your planning. Each user story should address one requirement, each business meeting should address one business concern & so on...

The concepts of Version Control are probably ones, that will not change over the course of a career. It's a fundamental skill that every single person involved with software development should posses. Source code is just text and VC systems allow us to identify the changes that might be causing problems in whatever system we are working on.

Communication stands out as a cornerstone, facilitating collaboration and ensuring clarity in conveying ideas, requirements, and project progress. Effective communication fosters a harmonious work environment, promotes teamwork, and mitigates misunderstandings, thereby expediting project delivery and bolstering client satisfaction.

Possibly the single most important skill you'll need, from your first day to a decade later: Patience. As a junior developer, you're going to need to be patient with *yourself* in order to work through problems that will seem confusing and alien at first. Patience will keep you learning and trying until you figure it out. Patience is also crucial in learning to communicate on a team, as you will have to get comfortable with different communication styles and personality types, and you will need to patiently listen and observe until you know where others are coming from.

Creativity is essential for thinking outside the box and coming up with innovative solutions to problems. It involves the ability to approach problems from different angles, explore alternative solutions, and challenge conventional thinking. Cultivating a creative mindset can lead to more elegant and efficient software designs and implementations.

Problem solving and logical reasoning is the core in software development. Programming languages may change. Fundamental skills will help to overcome the barriers of different languages, versioning, testing etc.

The days of the “stereotypical” individual contributor software engineer who sits in a dark room and works alone is not only narrow minded, but widely inaccurate. How many jobs can YOU think of that do not require the following skills: - communicating with coworkers, external stakeholders, and clients - understanding how to work on a team and navigate interpersonal conflicts or misunderstandings - adapting to changes in workflow, expectations, and client expectations It’s difficult to think of a job where a visual doesn’t need the skills listed above. Software programming is no exception. Soft skills are a must for software programmers, and in many cases as or more important than their technical ability to code.

Over my years one of the largest factors that make and break GOOD developers: The drive to never give up and the willingness to admit that you just don't know. Pride steps in so often and keeps most from truly reaching their potential. Don't allow pride to justify you smashing your head on a keyboard. Find a mentor, find a peer, and know you don't have to know everything -- NOBODY DOES. I've spent countless hours trying things to only figure it out within five minutes of pulling in somebody to just talk about it. Put the pride aside and be willing to LEARN.

Your software solution is not worthy if it does not solve a problem. Do not create something just because you want to or because someone else has already created something similar.

I see software development as the skill and the things above more in the nature of tools. Start with a simple idea and take it all the way through to delivery is my recommendation for learning. You'll learn a lot.
