You should consider the type of person that you are, and your communication style. The type of industry you want to work in and research that industry. Generally Industrial Engineers bring change and people are uncomfortable with change. Communication and communication channels become very important for an Industrial Engineer as one need to engage different stakeholders at their level to be able to get through to them and get the improvements going.

When looking at a career in IE, think about what you want to do & how it interacts with your personal life. For example, IE's who work for a large multi plant company may be required to travel to the plants to address problems as well as implement successful solutions you have previously developed. If you are working for a consulting organization you could be working with a new company every 1-2 weeks. However, if your focus is on quality you may remain at a single facility for the majority of the time to ensure products are made correctly. Regardless of which field within IE, seek out other IE’s who are in similar areas to get a better understanding of what you might encounter and that they align with your goals and objectives.
