I would say a mix is best. Automation is certainly there for speed, but some functional testing is still required to confirm the automation tests still maintain accuracy at times

I've had good experience using a Husim simulator on desktop for real phones to emulate user behavior across 4 phones e.g. when processing group calls and transfers. The GUI was executed by UFT and 2000 test cases are executed on the VM's 24/7.

In my opinion UFT One with AI capability is one of best tool for any application under test. Due to its AI capability it reduces the maintenance of automation scripts drastically during newer release of application

The best tools you can use on VOIP technology is wireshark for network capture. ICMP protocol for pinging network connectivity to telecom server. SIP protocol used for call signalling. RTP for media communication. Putty to Access servers.

What to test on will all come down to the platform the telecommunications is going over. If run by APIs you need tools to run these. Network is covered already with wireshark and pingplotter type tools, logs for your individual systems, SIP tracing capability for the calls and so much more. It all comes down to what is it you want to test and then balancing budget against need

Everyone appears to focus on the IT systems and not RF/LMR type systems and of course backups. Regardless of the system, you do have to test every part of the system and that means UPS and backup power, Shut the main breaker off and see if the UPS picks up the load, for the allotted amount of time for the backup generator to start and take the load? You would be amazed to learn that the UPS didn't function, wasn't tied into the actual supported systems or the backup generator wasn't serviced on a regular basis and did not start! True happenings on an actual EMS system!
