You’re a team leader. How can you use Agile Methodologies to improve your team’s performance?

The wise say, "Plans are Useless, Planning is Essential." Agile Teams iteratively plan their work, execute it in fixed short durations (called sprints), deliver value and get feedback from customers. The focus is not on creating a perfect plan, rather on the learning by doing and improving regularly. This allows the team to keep improving their planning approach every sprint and simultaneously keep improving the value of the product/service they are building. The Developers pull work and plan their sprints based on the highest value items ordered by the Product Owner.

Agile planning is like gardening. You start with a vision of what you want your garden to look like, with a rough sketch of the beds (roadmap) and a list of plants you'd like to grow (backlog). As seasons change and you learn more about your soil and local climate (feedback), your initial plans adapt. You plant in cycles (sprints), choosing what to sow based on the season and what's thriving. Sometimes, a plant doesn't take well, so you learn and adjust (retrospectives). Your garden grows iteratively, with each cycle bringing new blooms (increments) that make it more beautiful. This way, gardening becomes a journey of continuous improvement, adapting to the environment, and learning from experience, much like Agile projects.

Planning in Agile methodologies is dynamic and flexible, focusing on delivering value incrementally and adapting to change. Here are key aspects of planning in Agile: Product Backlog Release Planning Sprint Planning Capacity Planning User Stories and Acceptance Criteria Task Breakdown Daily Stand-ups Adaptability and Change Burndown Charts and Velocity Retrospectives By combining flexibility, continuous feedback, and a focus on delivering incremental value, Agile planning enables teams to respond to changing priorities and deliver products that meet customer needs effectively.

There can be many ways and scenarios where Agility is used to improve team's performance, for example for teams working on support Kanban methodology can be used to reduce waste and continuous improvement. To know what suits best depends on the individual team's usecase and some experimentation, till the right solution is found. But to do so, first the awareness of Agile values and principles should be given, it works as a foundation for the next steps.

I think communication is the key to transparency. The daily stand-ups can help team members come together and work collaboratively. If someone is struggling on an issue and voices the same in the standup the other team members can help or may even have faced a similar issue. This is subject to fostering such environment of open discussions. Open communication not only boosts individual moral but also helps the overall team performance.

By creating transparency of the essential information such as: # Product Backlog, # Sprint Backlog and # Increment, teams can enhance shared understanding and improve decision making. This eventually helps them to perform better. "Individuals and Interactions" are preferred over "Processes and Tools." The Scrum Master facilitates creation and or maximization of this information transparency.

In the last 5 years, I am working as individual company as consultant and trainer in agile methodologies, and I have seen many times how creating an environment of shared learning can make the difference! Promoting and sustaining a mindset of continuous improvement and securing that everyone feels safe in sharing their own perspective allows the teams to tap into the collective intelligence and pave the way for continuous learning. Allow room for experiments, collect clear results, share the insight and keep innovating, all of this is perfectly fine when adopting agile methodologies right!
