Writing is new to us humankind.It is a skill that needs to be taught. I always start with letter formation, and then I move to simple writing SVO. In order to write critically one needs to master the basics. Students often struggle with handwriting, organizing thoughts on paper. Teachers often assume that the students know how to write however they often lack foundational skills.

When combatting limited resources, you really have to make collaboration and fun the center of the work and do with what you have. Playing a video, giving students the “illusion” of choice, all things that make it feel like they have a hand in what they’re engaging in!

Teachers can use scissors and glue for editing and revising by having students physically cut and rearrange sections of their written work. This hands-on approach allows for a tangible and visual way to reorganize ideas, paragraphs, or sentences. After making revisions, students can glue the edited sections back into their composition. For proofreading, students can use one color to highlight spelling and grammar mistakes, another for punctuation, and so on. For publishing, students can use markers to create visually appealing headings, emphasize key points, or add illustrations. This approach not only improves editing skills but also adds a creative element to the final presentation of the written work.

Exchange your story with someone that answers the same questions and have a discussion. Use different colored pens to mark changes. State what you like about what you're reading, then state what you'd change.

VCOP is an approach often used to enhance student’s writing. Highlighters can be a powerful tool in this method, helping to visually segregate and emphasise different aspects of a text. A different colour is used to highlight the following: Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation. By using different colored highlighters for each aspect of VCOP, students can visually dissect their writing. This not only makes the learning process more interactive and enjoyable but also allows for easier identification of strengths and areas for improvement in their writing style. It encourages self-assessment and peer review, as the colors can clearly point out the elements of VCOP, making the feedback process more straightforward and constructive.

Books, magazines and journal articles can be used as models or points of references for students who are learning how to write. Introduce good examples to the students and get them to discuss about what is so good about the writing. Get them to take notes and learn specific aspects from these writings. If possible, ask them to try it out in their written assignments. It is also good to introduce them to less satisfactory examples of writing. This will allow them to learn from the mistakes of writers, as well as gain more awareness of the mistakes they should avoid.

You don't have to grade everything they write; have them choose one assignment every couple of weeks to revise and submit for a grade. I went to primary school in the 70s and 80s and we had fairly limited resources, yet we all learned to write. Writing is a physical, cognitive, psychological, and social act. Humans have an infinite supply of imagination - just listen to young children playing with toys. As we grow older, we begin to really on external resources, but writing resources are all around us and we can make prompts out of thin air. As long as we have something to write with and something to write on, we can still help learners develop their writing skills.

First thing you need is a good hook, as a good hook will spark interest and make students excited about learning. Writing is all about being creative and having lots of ideas. In order to do this, you can use many things such as dressing up, redecorating your classroom, turning your classroom door into a portal story... Once the students are excited, it's time to read high-quality model texts, see what works, explore genre features, and engage in lots of teacher modeling and shared writing until students are ready to create an independent piece. The best approach is to follow a writing scheme. Personally, I find Talk for Writing quite good.
