You’re tasked with creating a consulting proposal. What’s the first step?

As a social media consultant my first step is to do a full audit of their social media profiles. These audits - along with their solutions and goals - will vary depending on the size of the company. An audit for someone who does NOT outsource their labor (aka they are a one man show) will be focused on the social media platform that is best for their business and ONLY one whereas big companies need audits on ALL their channels and SHOULD utilize as many as they can. After getting to know the business and their weaknesses, I like to research their clients to understand HOW we can effectively solve their weaknesses since campaigns are for THEM. A business that cannot bring value to their customers will never last.

You need to know who is your client. Not just the name, but the context and culture. This helps you set the right strategy and roadmap for them.

Drafting a compelling proposal requires deep understanding of the client's unique requirements. It's more about Know Your Prospect (KYP). - Share job assessment form and request client to provide basic information consisting of requirements, scope, deadlines. - Scrutinize the client's website and social media presence to get insights into their mission, values, target audience, industry trends, and recent news. - Review annual reports, press releases, and other publicly available documents. - Schedule meeting with client to get more information on their expectations and point of view.

“Ser oferta de valor”. Este término lo conocí al aprender de coaching ontológico y lo resumo en “ser una persona que realmente ayude/solucione, y NO ser el típico vendedor de recetas y teorías en ppt” Si bien, es importante hacer una bonita propuesta de servicios, lo que realmente ayuda es entender la situación, y sobre todo, empatizar con el cliente. “No hay nada más poderoso que sentirse escuchado y comprendido” y es por esto que al hablar con clientes tengo muy presente 3 preguntas: ?Qué está cuidando? ?Qué necesita? ?Qué podría permitirse? Al tenerlas, ofrezco las posibles soluciones y dejo escoger, (es muy importante respectar el proceso y camino que escoja el cliente) recuerda “Lo que es evidente para ti, no siempre lo es para otro”

Usually, the Client will draft RFP with problem definition, requirements, expected content of the proposal and the timelines for delivery. Then you would lead a team of experts to compound on different solution components and craft the consolidated proposal. In case of existing Client, the essence would be on your competitive advantage: by being trusted advisor for the Client already, you can anticipate the preferred solution and tailor it to Client's needs.

There's so much technical information that goes into a proposal that the writing and presentation of the information becomes incredibly important. Think about including white space, giving it clear sections and adding in your/ or their brand colours to make the proposal more unique and professional. Include images and graphics where they you can. Images can convey information much quicker than words.

Selling consulting projects requires focusing on several aspects: 1. Deep understanding of the client and their needs. This involves researching your industry and understanding your business. 2. Demonstrate added value, highlighting the team's experience, methodologies and successful results in similar projects. 3. Personalization of the proposal 4. Establish strong relationships: Build and maintain strong relationships with clients 5. Be transparent and honest about what you can offer, costs involved, deadlines and any other relevant aspect. By taking these aspects into account and developing a solid strategy, you will be better positioned to sell consulting projects effectively.
