I get to dream up some pretty wild boats for different clients. It all starts within--getting the "bones" right. This means establishing with the Naval Architects and Engineers the floor height, the coaming height, all the basic ergonomics of the helm, cockpit and cabin before going off and drawing the cool boat. All that "boxing out" is used as an underlay for me to style over in 2D and 3D. This "cage" is often just a few lines that I know from long experience that drive the entire boat. Get the bones right first, then let your creativity flow. No matter how wild it looks--it actually works.

It’s about designing with beauty in mind while ensuring that the design serves its intended function flawlessly. This synthesis of art and practicality elevates industrial design from mere functionality to something that enhances human experience, blending creativity with everyday needs. To harmonize these aspects, an industrial designer looks both inward and outward. Inward, they draw on their own artistic instincts, creativity, and sense of aesthetics. Outward, they consider the needs of the users, the functionality of the product, and the technical realities of production. In this way, industrial design becomes a dance between imagination and utility

In my opinion, industrial design sits at the intersection of creativity and functionality, and the real magic happens when those that balance these two aspects. When artistic creativity can bring the form of an object with ergonomics and that is used for a function or a task, it is the right mix - form follows function. I will add-on by saying that there should be emotion to be added. That is when the real magic of harmony happens, that is when industrial design become more connected to become Human centred design.

there is no design without practical needs! in the same time artistic creativity helps others to anticipate the practical needs of design products providing information by form, materials, technology and function.
