1 Understand the context

What are their goals and pain points? What are the constraints and risks involved? By answering these questions, you can tailor your message to suit the purpose and tone of the communication. For example, when you present your architecture to a client, you might focus on the business value and benefits of your solution, while when you explain it to a developer, you might emphasize the technical details and best practices.

3 Write clear documentation

Documentation is another essential communication tool for system architects. Documentation can help you document your design decisions, assumptions, and trade-offs, as well as provide guidance and reference for your team and other stakeholders. However, documentation can also be time-consuming, outdated, and ignored if not done well. Therefore, you need to write clear, concise, and coherent documentation that covers the key aspects of your architecture, such as the requirements, the design principles, the architectural patterns, the components, the interfaces, the quality attributes, and the rationale. You also need to update and maintain your documentation regularly and align it with your code and diagrams.

Communication is not a one-way process. As a system architect, you also need to listen, ask, and respond to feedback, questions, and suggestions from others. Finally, as a system architect, you need to be able to adapt to changes in the requirements, the environment, or the technology. Changes are inevitable in software development, and they can have significant impacts on your architecture. Therefore, you need to communicate these changes proactively and promptly to your team and other stakeholders, and explain the implications and alternatives of your design. You also need to communicate the rationale and benefits of your changes, and seek feedback and approval from the relevant parties. Moreover, you need to communicate the changes in your diagrams, models, documentation, and code, and ensure consistency and traceability across them.
