I used to compete in running/triathlons. There was a saying that "Triathlon is a winter sport that is contested in the summer." If you sit down for performance review once a year with one week of preparation, you're less likely to be successful. Make performance evaluations part of your weekly routine. If they don't already ask for it, prepare a weekly report of your accomplishments that week and your goals for next week and send it to your manager. Keep all of these reports in a central location that you can go back to as you are preparing for your review. These contemporaneous notes will be a great resource!
