Motivate and inspire: Great project leaders can get the best out of their teams. Show your ability to motivate by acknowledging achievements, fostering collaboration, and creating a positive work environment. Make strategic decisions: Project managers handle processes, but leaders can analyze situations and make choices that benefit the project's goals. Look for opportunities to demonstrate strategic thinking.

To ascend to Project Leadership, I’ll seek out leadership training, take on more strategic responsibilities, demonstrate strong decision-making skills, and build relationships with key stakeholders ??

Expanding skill sets can promote an individual from project management to project leadership. To become a project leader, it is of great advantage to get relevant certifications, learn novel methodologies and their application to projects. Above all, upskilling in stakeholder/ risk management is very essential to grow as a project leader.

Continuous Learning: Pursue certifications, attend workshops, and stay updated with the latest industry trends and best practices. Leadership Development: Develop leadership skills through mentorship, coaching, and hands-on experience in leading projects. Skill Diversification: Expand your skillset by taking on diverse projects and roles that challenge and broaden your expertise.

To become a project leader, an individual should be able to see beyond the project at hand, understand how it connects to other projects of the organisation. Work towards the vision and mission of the organisation and have the capacity to propel team members to work towards achieving the big picture.

Project management is unique in that it provides the opportunity for informal leadership of people through the projects you lead. One of my biggest learnings was to spend time with the members of your project team, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and then coaching them for success. This takes the typical mentor/coach responsibility of a people/team manager and provides you with examples of how you have been successful in this area.

To avoid being stuck in project management, an individual should spread their connection and influence. Create a balance by connecting to experts in different fields, have a great relationship with team members by providing open and effective communication, be quick to detect conflict and resolve it, creating a clear role and plan for achieving tasks.

If you want to build influence at a company, the first step is understanding what that culture values. Mine is competency. I work with incredibly intelligent engineers, and if you want them to respect you, you have to understand their challenges and goals. If you are just asking for status, you'll be quickly dismissed. So take the first step and understand what types of traits are most valued by those you work with and start there.
