Yes Goals, or OKR, or KPR is where it starts, and you'll be told that they better be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable....), but this is not enough. These are a destination, where you want to go. What is missing is goal planning, is how to get there. Plan and draw a path with clear steps which you can dynamically measure and adjust, and you'll hit your goals one after the other.

In my experience, tracking leadership goals goes beyond just using OKRs (Objectives and Key Results). Leadership objectives encompass a broader spectrum, requiring a multifaceted approach for effective monitoring. Various methods are instrumental, including regular check-ins and feedback sessions, setting SMART goals, engaging in continuous learning programs, and seeking insights through 360-degree assessments. Additionally, self-assessment surveys, peer mentoring, and performance dashboards contribute to a comprehensive evaluation of leadership objectives. A combination of these methods ensures a holistic approach, allowing organisational leaders to navigate their goals with adaptability, enabling growth and success.

Leadership goals, where to begin.....I guess it depends on what kind of business you are running or what kind of program you are executing. For me it is all about ensuring that our employees are happy and satisfied. I run a services company and one metric that we use to determine results and measure the effectiveness of the workforce is a climate survey for the company. This lets me as a leader to understand how the employees are feeling about their jobs and leadership within the company. It is a very effective tool where one can see if they need to change the environment of the organization or not.

Tracking first of all, second helping yourself analyze what you just got from the tracking and be more transparent with your audience and customers.

There are handful uses of OKR. The fist can be attributed to the most important on the list which "tracking" to enable you assess your current position. Secondly, to enable understand the specifics and hitting them without guess works. Lastly, it enables to make inform decisions on the most critical points of engagment.

Writing OKRs well can be the make or break of the success of an OKR. A well-written OKR inspires and guides teams and individuals toward a desired outcome. A poorly written OKR however can be demotivating and lack direction, costing teams and individuals lost time and effort. Here are a few things to keep in mind when writing your OKRs: 1. Setting objectives. There are three main types of objectives: build, improve, and innovate. 2. Setting key results. Once you have your objectives set, the next step is to create key results that’ll define and communicate what achieving your objective means, and whether you’re close to your objective. 3. Setting initiatives. Tasks, projects, and to-dos that will help you push the needle on the key results.

Forget dry templates and rigid frameworks! Craft OKRs that sing by focusing on the "O" - Objectives. Make them audacious, inspiring, and specific enough to ignite your inner captain. Think "revolutionize the employee experience," not "improve employee satisfaction." This magnetic north will naturally attract the "KRs" - measurable milestones that chart your course. Remember, it's not about ticking boxes, it's about charting a bold voyage!

Setting OKRs is a vital leadership task that demands vision, collaboration, and flexibility. Begin by crafting objectives that align with your mission, using inspirational language. For instance, "Increase customer satisfaction" clearly guides team efforts. Next, establish two to five measurable key results per objective, like "Attain a 95% positive rating in customer surveys," to set specific targets. It's crucial to share and align these OKRs with your team to ensure collective commitment and direction. Then regularly reviewing OKRs, acknowledging achievements, and adapting them based on feedback and data. This approach not only tracks progress but also cultivates a dynamic environment conducive to ongoing improvement and success.

7 tips for setting simple OKRs. 1. Keep it Simple— set clear and achievable objectives based on available resources and project complexity. 2. Be Specific — make sure to set specific objectives and brainstorm different ways to achieve them. This will help you know exactly what's needed. 3. Cascade Your Objectives —help employees see how their work contributes to overall goals and vision. 4. Make it Measurable—assign a unit of measurement to key results. 5. Make your goals challenging but achievable. 6. Break down your key results into smaller goals. 7. Celebrate milestones, even if they occur early in the process, by rewarding and recognizing yourself and others.

In my journey, I've found that the secret to tracking leadership goals isn't just in the tool, but in how you use it. Start by defining your goals with clarity and purpose. I recommend a tool like Microsoft To Do or Google Keep for their simplicity and effectiveness. List your goals, break them down into smaller tasks, and set regular review intervals. These tools, when used consistently, can serve as a daily reminder of your leadership path, helping you stay aligned with your ultimate vision." Each of these responses provides practical advice and personal insights, catering to different preferences for narrative, concise guidance, or an inspirational approach.

Avoid using OKRs in a vacuum! Powerful objectives and measurements are best when calibrated (regularly!!) with your boss, team, partners and other stakeholders. Use your OKRs to catalyze conversations with others. Use them as a tool to guide decisions and work, not as dogma.

Implementing OKR is a crucial, ongoing process in effective leadership and goal management. It's best to limit to three to five objectives, each with two to five key results. This focus ensures ambitious yet attainable goals, adhering to SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). For instance, "Grow revenue by 30% in the fiscal year" is a measurable and challenging goal. Making OKRs visible to all team members promotes transparency and collaboration. Flexibility to adjust objectives and key results in response to new data and scenarios is also essential. Utilizing tools like spreadsheets or specialized apps for tracking progress is vital, providing a clear, real-time overview of progress toward leadership goals

Los OKR no deberían alinearse a la estrategia, debería ser la estrategia la que diga cuáles son los objetivos e indicadores clave de éxito. Esto puede lograrse implementando la estrategia con la herramienta Balance Score Carde BSC o Cuadro de Mando Integral, inventada por Robert Kaplan y David Norton. El BSC sirve para implementar y medir la estrategia, de tal forma que todas las áreas y personas de la organización sepan cómo aportan a la gran meta. En mi experiencia esta herramienta es la más sólida para ejecutar una estrategia y proporciona alineación. Los indicadores clave de éxito provienen de la estrategia.

Most people know the basics of how to use it, but it is only when you start to learn more of its capabilities and the power it has that you can really start to unleash its potential to really help you. Hence the same applies to learning OKR, and it pays dividends to take the time to understand more. Google is obviously a primary source with numerous videos, and there are various books that can be obtained. But key is to learn how OKR works before you need to apply it to a project. There is nothing worse than trying to learn a new programme whilst also running a project.

When trying to attract good people to the organisation, we need to ensure that what our people are saying about the organisation is good. How do we do that? We create an environment that focusses on them and helps to learn to lead, grow and increase their influence. That is the starting point for any highly effective leader. We cannot attract good people to the organisation of what our people are saying about it is bad. I have heard some good things and bad things said about certain organisations, and people remember the bad things a lot more than they remember the good.

I love reading and am fortunate to possess some of the finest books in my personal library. Among my top three recommendations, "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek explores defining goals with purpose, "High Output Management" by Andrew S. Grove provides timeless insights into effective leadership, and "Measure What Matters" by John Doerr is the best book for understanding OKRs. Everybody wants some. I’m an advocate for winning and if OKR works for you - awesome. Recommend “experimenting” with this. This takes the fail-factor out. Experiments require research, the AI recommendations above are great they lack a human factor. Use LinkedIn to ask someone in Google now how OKRs are working for them. You may find, not everyone uses them and it’s not effective for everyone. Or, you may just find an insider who can help you grow too. Take away - trial and error. It works WHEN paired with your network. And everybody wants a network that can help them.

Here are two of my five recommendations (the maximum contribution is 750 ): 1. Embrace OKRs: Objectives and Key Results are a proven framework for setting ambitious, measurable goals. Think big with your objective ("Become the market leader in sustainable energy"), then break it down into smaller, achievable key results ("Increase renewable energy production by 20%"). 2. Invest in Visibility: Dashboards, spreadsheets, even sticky notes on your wall—make your goals visible. Track progress regularly, celebrate wins, and acknowledge setbacks. Transparency breeds accountability and fuels motivation.

OKR, KPI or any other framework we use it just as form to give us overview of goal we pursue. In most cases I use to have goals open in my lap top and on weekly basis checking progress and timeline given. In so many cases operational stuff put aside OKR and here or there we forget to do follow up regarding timeline and things easily slip away. So keep weekly overview of OKR and your status, progress and changes. Make this as part of your regular check to be sure that everything you do is in regard with timeline.

OkR is important for any leader as sets the direction for what you want to achieve. That is key and has been articulated above. But in my experience, the process of defining the OKR itself is very empowering to your team, if done in an inclusive and participatory way. When the team is part of the process of defining the OKR, this fosters ownership and team working , helping to align team members’ own work with the leader’s OKP. Therefore leadership OKP should be closely aligned or be a mirror of the organisational vision, mission etc.

There are three commonly used tools for tracking and managing leadership goals effectively. The first tool is a Personal Development Plan (PDP), which is a structured document outlining leadership goals, activities, milestones, and timeliness. The second tool is project management software such as Asana, Trello, or Monday.com. These platforms allow you to create task lists, set priorities, assign deadlines, and track progress. The third tool is personal reflection which allows for a more introspective tracking of progress. Regularly taking time to reflect on achievements, areas for improvement, and challenges faced helps in learning from experiences, setting new goals, and maintaining a clear vision.
