To tackle burnout in strategic communications, start by identifying its root causes: workload, deadlines, expectations, feedback, clients, colleagues, or environment. Prioritize, delegate, communicate, or negotiate with stakeholders to address these stressors. Seek clarity, support, or flexibility from managers, teams, or clients if feeling overwhelmed. Strategically address these challenges to regain balance and momentum in your career.

To stay motivated in your Strategic Communications career, set clear, achievable goals to give direction and purpose. Regularly update your skills through online courses or workshops to stay relevant and engaged. Seek feedback from peers and mentors for growth and inspiration. Network within your industry to share experiences and discover new perspectives. Find a passion project related to your field to reignite your enthusiasm. Lastly, prioritize self-care to maintain mental and physical well-being, ensuring you have the energy to pursue your career aspirations. Remember, motivation thrives on progress, learning, and personal well-being.

Spend time with yourself to see why you are feeling the way you are feeling. Stop looking around. Don't try to be like someone else. You need to be you. Better than you yesterday. Focus on learning and focus on your goals. And take the break you have been looking for. Pamper yourself. Don't take others too seriously. You will be fine.

The first step to overcome burnout is to understand what is causing it. Is it the workload, the deadlines, the expectations, the feedback, the clients, the colleagues, the environment, or something else? Be honest with yourself and try to pinpoint the specific sources of stress or dissatisfaction. Then, you can prioritize, delegate, communicate, or negotiate with the relevant stakeholders to address them. For example, you can ask for more clarity, support, or flexibility from your manager, team, or client if you feel unclear, overwhelmed, or constrained by your work.

By revisiting the core reasons that drew me to this field. It's about reminding myself of the impact my work has—not just on operational success but on the safety and effectiveness of my team. Realigning with my foundational goals helps reignite my passion. Additionally, seeking feedback from peers and commanders, and reflecting on past successes and areas for growth, can offer insights that refine my approach and strategies. Embracing the complexities of modern warfare and the evolving digital battlefield as opportunities for innovation and leadership can drive a renewed sense of motivation and commitment to excellence in my field.

Love the idea of reconnecting with a personal purpose… and reflecting back on prior experiences. From this vantage point - I would say that Cross-Disciplinary Learning keeps the mind fresh. Explore beyond strategic communications. Read widely, attend diverse events, and collaborate across fields. Mash up ideas such as: Digital/creative, technology/arts, business/culture, industry/geography. Follow areas of interest and lean into challenges. Growth happens at the intersection of disciplines!

Generative AI has opened up a whole new world for us as communicators, and we have opportunities to learn skills that will prepare us for the future of work. Experiment with AI tools (I’m currently enjoying Copilot) to help you break out of a style rut. Test out different tones and structural approaches. Take time to craft detailed prompts that address your most stubborn comms challenges, and see how AI can offer new ideas you may not have considered. The exercise itself can reveal where your own thinking may need refinement. Chatbots are only as good as the prompts we give. But whether the output hits the mark or completely misses it, I’ve found the experimentation itself stimulates the brain and helps me to think outside of the box.

Things are changing all the time in this industry. If you feel things are beginning to stagnate, sign up to take a course or attend a conference. In-person events where you can network and gain new perspectives are particularly helpful.

In my experience, a work-from-home environment can help promote work/life balance. I'm an "OG" of WFH, far before the pandemic. This lets you get the work done but with the flexibility to add more exercise and outdoor time into your routine because you've cut out the commute. To avoid burnout, give people the flexibility to help with kids or parents or to go to a doctor's appointment as needed, as long as the work gets done.

I personally believe that, when you want to balance the work and life or education and life or family and career, then you should not hold any unnecessary things, which drags you back and stops you. That deviates our focus. We couldn't balance both the things. Consequently, we may lose anyone thing. But if we are free from unnecessary things, we can be stay focused. So, we need to plan all the things starting from gathering money to doing work, in simple words I want to say that try to monetize your skills, monetize your knowledge as soon as possible, in the earlier stage when you're a student. Because if you manage well career and family at the time of a student, you also can manage both the work and life well.

I find that books that surround my purpose and self transformation are great leisure reads. Seeking improving something you feel passionate about in your career, and making the time to devote to one’s development psychologically has been exponentially useful and is now a main priority for career pathing for me.

There’s a great book called, “What color is your parachute?” that can help unlock feelings of being stuck. Where you are working may not be the right environment for you, the right company, the right industry. You can take marketing skills and apply them almost anywhere. Just like you would tweak content based on analytics, you can tweak other variables as well- company size, culture, the industry itself, until you get it right. It’s a lifelong journey but the book may help.
