So much anxiety stems from a lack of confidence. Working with a vocal coach over time helps students build confidence in areas like pitch, style, tone, and more. As students improve in the areas they want to develop, they gain confidence in the studio, which then transfers to the stage.

When we're feeling anxious, we can push our anxiety away and pretend it doesn't exist - or we can acknowledge it and accept it. In my experience, when I acknowledge it and accept it, it tends to disappear, whereas if I push it way, it gets worse. Every time we step up on stage, we're taking a risk. Risk is like a coin: one side of the coin is the terror of failure; the other side of the coin is the excitement of success - that's what makes a performance electrifying for the audience. We can see our anxiety as energy which is both fear AND excitement and use the energy in our performance. Our feelings are information - our anxiety is telling us we really care about the performance. If we didn't give a damn, we wouldn't feel anxious.

When I work with a singer who is feeling anxiety, I first try to assess where the anxiety is coming from. Does this singer feel anxious about a specific aspect of their performance? Are they generally anxious? Have they had some bad experiences in the past that they aren't quite over? Do they have limiting self-beliefs? There are so many reasons a singer might feel this way. In our sessions we work to secure the voice so that the singer grows to trust that their instrument will do what they need it to do. But we also tackle the mind-body issues that can cause anxiety. We do this by working on positive self-talk, and other nervous system calming strategies. But the number one way that I help them is to let them know I am their champion.

Before entering the stage protect yourself from being exposed to the audience by finding the exact reason that sets you back. By accusing yourself of being vulnerable or anything else it’s not helpful. All people have their virtues and their weaknesses and strengths and that’s true. But ask yourself why you are there? Why you want to share your music? What’s the purpose of this performance? Have you something interesting to share or it’s just a matter of your vanity ? Is your performance a real need for communication or just a game of self confirmation? If you find the real value of yourself then you will not be hesitant or disappointed and you will vanish any sign of fear that you may have. Know your worth and sing from your heart ??
