If you're struggling with self-doubt, motivational interviewing (MI) can be a game-changer in boosting your confidence. MI focuses on enhancing your intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. Start by asking open-ended questions; this approach allows you to delve into the root causes of your self-doubt and better understand your feelings. Next, practice reflective listening by paraphrasing what you think you’re feeling, which helps validate your emotions and gain clarity about your thoughts. Additionally, affirm your strengths by identifying and celebrating your past successes, which can help build a positive self-imag.

Motivational interviewing can help build confidence by: 1. Showing Self-Kindness: Be compassionate with yourself instead of judgmental. 2. Recognizing Strengths: Reflect on your past successes to remind yourself of your abilities. 3. Setting Small Goals: Focus on manageable steps toward growth, which boosts confidence as you progress. 4. Fostering Self-Belief: Trust that you have the power to make positive changes. 5. Encouraging Inner Motivation: Shift focus from needing outside approval to finding confidence within. These techniques helped me personally turn self-doubt into self-assurance by focusing on my own strengths and growth.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) can help build confidence by fostering self-awareness and highlighting personal strengths. Through open-ended questions, reflective listening, and affirmations, MI guides you to recognize past achievements and current capabilities. This process helps you see your potential and value, transforming self-doubt into self-belief. By exploring your values and setting realistic goals, MI strengthens your commitment to change and enhances confidence, helping you focus on progress rather than perceived flaws.

MI can help you to learn more and gain further understanding of where that self-doubt comes from and to make a decision and take action to remove it. The need to build rapport and some agreed understanding of how to proceed is important. MI helps a client become more self-aware, ready to take action to make changes to their life and how they see themselves. This includes challenging any cognitive dissonance. A client often experiences self-doubt when their beliefs and actions are not consistent or they hold two beliefs that are in conflict. For example, a belief in giving your time to your family and a belief in achievement at work. Using socratic questions helps unpick that conflict and reduce self-doubt.

I’m autistic. I have a couple unique challenges. I use a few things from MI. I start with time alone, spending a few minutes on this routine: Try to remember past situations that went well. Focus not so much on how I did things, but how I felt in body & mind. Try to see things I’d do more of… what I'd change. I recall strengths… like creativity & a strange ability to improvise despite shyness... when I “perform." Reduce my goals to a short memorable phrase or rhyme. Then chant it enough to burn it in. Focus on overwhelm factors. How can I deal with fluorescent lights? Dark glasses. How can I focus with many voices talking? Memorize names I most want to listen to. I love routine… so I do this before calls, interviews, meetings…
