Retention thrives in a culture where staff feel seen, heard and valued. That means their input is warmly encouraged (and solicited), their hard work is rewarded (with fair compensation and time off), and they feel psychologically safe to show their authentic selves.

In my opinion, the key is not to "retain" it is to "grow together." For this to happen, it is necessary that we are all aligned in our purpose, the positive social impact we are making and the differential value that all the people who make up the team play to make it this way. In this way, our entity will continue to grow and will allow us to integrate the best talent.

Employees need to see that the work they're doing is important, that they are employee important and are a vital part of the organization. They need to feel like the organization sees them as irreplaceable. If they feel irreplaceable, they'll see you, the employer, as replaceable too. What does irreplaceable look like? That shows up in the form of encouragement and support for new ideas. Support and openness for changing long-standing and old school ways. Cutting through the red tape to get funding and resources to back initiatives and help them get outcomes. When there's ego, or people looking over their shoulder, you don't get employees best out of them. Lastly, Surround irreplaceable employees with other high performers!

I agree with Oscar, building a common story, where talent feels part of the process its key. you should not think in terms of retention but in terms of achieve common goals, this way talent will commit because they became part of something bigger.

Those include: * Realistic responsibilities. Does the employee have the skills, tools, and time to handle all their responsibilities? * Leadership modeling behavior. Do the senior leaders have work-life balance or do they come early and stay late? (The rest of the staff will take their cues from this.) * Good tools. Do staff have good computers, software, and other tools to do their work well? very often, relatively small investments here will significantly boost productivity and morale, quickly paying for themselves.

We must be full disclosure about our pay ranges. They should be included with job posts. This is the right thing to do especially if equity is a principle you believe in. When salary ranges are not posted often time women lose in the negotiation process because they do not know where to start. Also it’s not just about the salaries, nonprofit employees deserve a proper benefit package with retirement, healthcare, vacation and sick days, standard of living increases and an opportunity for merit increases as well.

Budget for salary increases. Nonprofits are the backbone of society. So much fabulous and life-changing work gets done through these critical social platforms. If there is constant staff turnover, disenchantment with salary levels and no budgetary plan made for keeping the best staff, then it will always be two steps forward, one step back.

Regular recognition and constructive feedback are crucial for retaining top talent in your nonprofit. Celebrate both major and minor achievements to show your team their efforts are appreciated. Foster an environment where feedback flows both ways, making employees feel valued and heard. This open communication encourages a sense of ownership and belonging, which strengthens commitment and increases the likelihood of long-term retention.

Many nonprofits that I work with struggle to keep highly qualified individuals when it comes to offering benefits. Salary seems to be less of a factor than benefits.
