One of the first and most important steps in SE project planning is to elicit, analyze, specify, validate, and verify the requirements of the system. Requirements management software tools can help you capture, document, trace, and manage the requirements throughout the project lifecycle. They can also help you link the requirements to other project artifacts, such as design models, test cases, and risks, and generate reports and metrics. Some examples of requirements management software tools are DOORS, Jama Connect, and Caliber.

One important aspect of requirements management is traceability through the product lifecycle, and the ability to link related requirements and subsystems. Product development often requires multiple handoffs from architects and systems engineers creating the requirements, to software and hardware teams designing and implementing them, and testing and validation. I’ve used Jama before but pivoted to Jira from Atlassian in order to track product completion with software and validation teams.

The most important thing I would start with is a group of people who understand the problem goals and possible solutions and then work with either a real whiteboard or a virtual one and start discussing or drawing out options and make sure everything is agreed on the project journey. The communication and mutual understanding is more important than the tooling.

It’s worth doing a study or comparison between the requirements management tools to determine which tool is best suited for the project or company. If the tool is used across the company for different projects, it makes this point even more important. Software tool companies do also provide opportunities for trials for use of the tool, good to make use of this.

Modeling and simulation software tools can help you visualize, explore, and test the system behavior, performance, and interactions before building the actual system.
