Listening to a speaker who uses personal stories is much more enjoyable to me, so I inject them as often as appropriate. Practicing won't make my presentation perfect, but it will make it stronger than if I didn't prepare. Timing is critical, especially when using humor. Stand-up comedians practice their timing extensively at small venues before delivering it on the big stage, and we should do the same. The more we practice using humor, the better it will be. Record yourself if you have little stage time, or try it out with someone you trust to give feedback.
