When tracking your team's progress it is important to have clear alignment on what you are tracking to. What is the definition of done? If you do not have a clear understanding of expectations, scope, and objectives, you will struggle to initiate actionable status reporting. Ensuring that each project is substantiated by a Project Charter will help you align everyone on what the end goals are, and enable you to define interim checkpoints to monitor progress along the way.

Your team members need to be able to perform self-assessments occasionally. They need to know how much and to what extent they contribute to the major objectives of the project. To achive this, we need to break down our goals and set project milestones and later ask team members to evaluate their own work and define how close they are to the nearest milestone.

Ensuring your project schedule is maintained in some kind of project management software is critical for a project of any size. Being consistent with your status updates and progress reporting can be easier said than done. Many communication issues that persist with project teams can be driven back to the fact they are inconsistent with their status reporting, and the reporting that is being done is often incomplete or unspecific. The cadence with which a project team meets to formally update their progress can be debated, in my experience, a project of any significance or strategic importance should be formally updated weekly to ensure issues are identified as early as possible and risks are proactively mitigated. Bad news does not age well.

Recognize and celebrate milestones and achievements. As a way to enhance your team's efforts pay attention to celebrating their achievements, even with the smallest gestures you can think of. Positive reinforcement can motivate the team and boost morale. So, embrace a mindset of continuous improvement, recognizing that the more you focus on reinforcing achievements, the greater the positive impact on your team performance will be.
