The golden rule "Think different" to create new options to address the same needs. Use the what-if-scenario framing to create different scenarios like better price, faster availability, easier use, better margin, new markets, new technology...

To find new product ideas you need to find NEW problems to solve or REFRAME existing problems. You're looking for product ideas that are connected to a real problem and are technologically feasible and economically viable. Engage in conversations and observations with your current/potential, and extreme customers to identify problems and pain points. Immerse yourself in the user/customer's world to gain empathy. Once a problem is identified, employ a range of ideation tools, such as SCAMPER or The Worst Idea Possible brainstorming, to generate a diverse SET of potential ideas. Force yourself to think beyond your first idea as initial ideas are seldom the best.

There is no better tool than your community. Consider asking people who are experiencing the same problem to have a conversation with you about what they find stressful, frustrating, or unusable about an existing product or situation. Often, having an open back and forth with other people is an ideal way to get the juices flowing on coming up with new solutions.

Go back to student mode.. Ideas are lying in reports, journals, research papers, point of views or blogs. The more we read the more we find gaps. Once you identify one start digging deep and understand how deep it goes and how much impact it is having on a business. Then start reading again what are the ways to fill such gaps. Same loop of process to find ways and then come back with a comprehensive report. It always worked for me and I am sure it will work for others !!

In the past, I have employed various methods to test my assumptions before developing products: 1. User Interviews: One-on-one conversations to understand their experiences, challenges, and expectations 2. Surveys: Distributing structured surveys to gather statistical information about preferences and opinions. 3. Card Sorting: Users organise content or concepts into groups, helping designers understand their mental models and information hierarchy. 4. Diary Studies: Users maintain diaries or logs of their experiences and interactions with a product over an extended period. Often choosing the right combination of tools helps build a comprehensive view of customer needs and aids in validating if the problem is worth solving.

With low code platforms becoming more popular, I can’t find a better way than choosing one platform and put the time in understanding how it can speed up your process. Since after that, any prototype, whether it’s a web application, report, API, mobile app, would be easy to spin up and take down too.

Never underestimate allowing a fresh pair of eyes look at your existing product. Sometimes teams who have spent so much time with a product get in a blind spot and can miss some “obvious” UX improvements or ideas that a fresh pair of “novice” eyes can spot if allowed to explore those products without guidance. Simple tool: talk to customer. Try to engage in forums where your potential customers hang out. Their problems can become your opportunities. Also, consider leveraging customer feedback channels (e.g. reviews) as a source for ideation.

- Go to where people are: coffeeshops, supermarkets, museums. Just watch people, how they behave and why. - Follow what the big industry is investing in: what kind of huge factories are being built, what kind of new materials are being invented. Those will determine the needs and trends of the future.
