You're struggling to find a job. How can a career coach help you stand out from the crowd?

I always teach the coachees a marketing funnel approach. Do you have a top-of-funnel problem? For example, not getting any feedback or recruiters contacting for interviews? This is a marketing problem: not enough leads. Do you have a mid-funnel problem? Couldn’t get the second interview after the first round? This is an interview problem; how can a coach help? Or do you have a bottom-funnel problem? Often, they get shortlisted but always lose out to the successful candidate. This is a great problem to have, which requires deeper conversation and negotiation. It is understanding where you are in the funnel to help with the coaching and how to develop better techniques.

One of the main things a career coach can help you with is to create a resume where you "see yourself". What I mean by that is your resume should give the reader the "why". Why are you perfect for the role and that might not have to do with you qualifications it might have to do with your skills or behaviours. This is the key to a great career coach.

They can conduct mock interviews, provide constructive feedback, and offer tips on how to effectively answer common interview questions, communicate your value proposition, and make a positive impression on hiring managers.

Networking is crucial for job search success, and a career coach can help you expand your professional network and visibility. They can provide guidance on networking strategies, including how to identify and connect with relevant contacts, participate in industry events and online communities, and leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn to showcase your expertise and attract job opportunities.

Sometimes we don't go in the right direction, applying for jobs that don't feature prominently on our CVs. There's a difference between wanting to do a job and making the recruiter understand that we know how to do it so that he'll call us. Apart from that, if you apply on Sunday evening, your CV will appear in the recruiters' inboxes on Monday morning. Go live on linkedin by adding recruiters and asking them to chat for 5 minutes. (This has always worked for me).
