You’re struggling to engage your audience during a presentation. What can you do to make it more interactive?

Firstly - well done! You have noticed that you are losing your audience. So many presenters dont read the room and have no clue if their audience is engaged or not. Secondly - prepare to go off script. Have an anecdote, a funny story, an engaging question lined up so that you can break from the PPT slides and engage. But dont stop there............build on the response, ask more relevant questions until you feel they are back on track. And lastly - be honest and direct with your audience. Ask a question - is this getting too detailed? Have I lost some of you? Do we need to have a break?

1) Get them interacting in small ways by asking questions and getting them to put up their hands (or type something in the chatbox if online). 2) Say something unexpected, unusual, or a data point that hits home/is relatable. 3) Vary your tone of voice, use the space and your body to express emotion!

One thing I notice works well in a meeting, both engaging the audience as well as demonstrating preparedness, is to proactively address a concern. Something like, "What you are probably thinking right now is..." or "A question I'm sure you are wanting to ask is..." I like to make solid eye contact when I do this and read their face on whether it landed. In my experience, answering questions before they have to ask creates connection.

I integrate high-quality images, videos, or animations of the distilling process, cocktail crafting, or spirit tastings. I show a captivating video of the rum aging process. Visuals enhance understanding, yet they should complement, not overshadow, the spoken content.

There is nothing more dull than listening to someone talk for hours on end looking at slides. You have to consider the audience and the topic but adding in a discussion element - prompted via questions or adding a poll to spark a conversation will have engage the audience and greater potential impact. Be mindful that it is not dominated by a select few, keep control to monitor time and meandering from the topic at hand.

The thing I found helpful is that If you ask such questions which make your audience recall events and experiences that are relevant to the topic, they will build their interest in listening. Secondly, if you ask open-ended questions that initiate curiosity among the audience, they will listen to the session more attentively till the end.

1. Audience focus is generally about first 3 mins Focused then it will fade. So keep your topics SMART each not more than 3-5mins max, then change to topic to maintain audience focus. 2. If a topic details or demonstration exceeds beyond 5mins, then ensure to ask questions to communicate the importance of the topic to audience and their key purpose of attending this important session.. Interact with Q’s to keep audiences Thinking and Pondering on the topic idea. This way you win audience focus full time of the session Remember to End the session with a great take away note or something powerful to ponder. This way you can win audience vote for your next session. Presentation is an effective and powerful art of communication.

Something that has worked for me includes multiple choice questions using poll / chat on topics during the session that I surely want my audience to go back with answers. This is more relevant on presentations that are for knowledge dissemination / informative.

I've successfully used interactive tools like Mentimeter (with QR code engagement link) even for larger audiences (upwards of 200 people). You can ask yes/no and ranking questions, keywords to build word clouds etc. When preparing the interaction, think about the audience (demographics, knowledge and interests, reasons they are attending). It's important to prepare in advance for various possible results and weave them meaningfully into the story you're telling.

I believe it is important to involve your audience in your presentation. First, share information, methods and context regarding your topic. Make sure that you share many resources into which those who are motivated can dig more deeply. When/where possible, provide a short activity in which the audience can experience some aspect of the topic. For example in a recent presentation about AI in higher education, I gave the audience URLs to try out different chatbots (after explaining how each was unique). Then I asked them to perform in an informal hackathon, using three chatbots to come up with solutions, while, at the same time comparing the different chatbots. This launched the audience on continuing to evaluate and apply AI in their work.

Ultimately, everything comes down to delivery. The presenter should be able to hold the audience throughout the span of the presentation through various means of engagement. Now a days people have less attention spans and it is very easy to lose the audience with boredom. Constant engagement is necessary to keep the spirits up.

I add some pieces of humor, but I am always diligent about not losing the context and topic. I try to make the 30-45 minutes quite pleasant and light for the people.

I have a good sense of humor and I like telling stories, I also mispronounce a lot of words. This seems to calm people down (maybe she's nervous ) and make me less intimidating. So basically as a presenter, utilize your strengths and weaknesses to your advantage.

In my experience, I would make a quick joke or puzzle to bring everyone’s attention back on track. Ask anyone to reiterate what has been explained earlier for the benefit of others who didn’t quite grasp certain points. Give room for questions and answer these questions with practical examples.
