Connecting with students is essential. 1. Activity. Start the year with an activity where students express who they are. I provide an assignment called, Cultural Basket. In the Google Slide assignment, I provide a template with a table of contents called "artifacts." Students get to tell me about themselves in a creative way. I love reading about their background and interests. 2. Class Expectations. Establish class guidelines concerning self and others. Communicate with the teacher when there is a concern. Listen and guide students to solutions with encouragement and empathy. 3. Material. Create material that is engaging. After a lecture, students watch a parody of the material and the students love it and have a better understanding.

This is all about personal connections. If a student is interested in what you have to say, they are more likely to listen. Often, the best way to move things forwards is actually to forget (momentarily!) what the lesson objective actually is, and just go back to basics to build a relationship. Taking the time and investing in a student, or group of students, personally, shows that you value them and their time. You might be the only person to ever show interest in them - this can be the difference between clicking and engaging with them on a work level and having them switch off with school completely. You can always go back and teach them that important thing another time.

Active listening is crucial for engaging your students. When they speak, give them your full attention, showing that their thoughts and opinions matter. Teachers who pivot are teachers that enjoy classes of engaged and excited students. No one will question the fact that the day's lesson concept is important. However, by pivoting, you are showing the students that nothing is "black and white" and there can be more than one way to do something. Students also enjoy when things deviate because its "not what we were supposed to do" and that can be exciting, little do they know, they are still learning!
