When people say "ability to converse at all levels" in their profile/CV I like to know what that looks like. When you ask them it's usual "listening, paraphrasing, empathy and tone of voice" but for me it's about being yourself. Coming across as genuine, no airs or graces and especially no side. You'll soon trip up trying to be something you are not. The team will appreciate and respond to you more when you stay true to yourself and show up as you...

Adapting to different communication styles when working with teammates requires awareness, flexibility, and empathy. Start by observing how your colleagues prefer to communicate—some might be direct and to the point, while others may favor detailed discussions or a more collaborative approach. Tailor your communication to match their style, whether it’s through concise emails, in-depth conversations, or active listening during meetings. Clarify expectations to avoid misunderstandings and ask questions when unsure. Being patient and open-minded can also help, as it allows you to better understand their perspective. Lastly, give constructive feedback while being receptive to it, fostering a balanced and supportive team environment.

Each employee is different. So it only makes sense that their communication style would be as diverse as they are. Recognizing that is the first step to effective leadership. Many leaders make this mistake: they believe how they’re communicating will resonate with every employee the same way. While the key message can stay the same. how it is communicated is what needs to be tailored for each team member. Another mistake many leaders make is not asking their team for feedback. For example, if you want to be viewed as highly relatable and empathetic with your team, ask them: how can I better communicate with you? That simple question will open up a door of much more effective communication between the two of you.

A great way to adapt to their different communication styles is to really pay attention to how each person likes to communicate. Start by observing their preferences some might prefer quick messages while others enjoy a good chat. Don’t hesitate to ask them directly what they prefer, too !Being flexible is key if someone likes details, provide that, and if another prefers a quick summary, keep it short. Using visuals can also help, especially since some are more visual learners. Creating a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and following up to check in can make a big difference in building those connections.

It takes 2 to tango! Communication is a two way process. You need to understand your own style and that of others. Adjustments will need to be made while staying true to yourself. You can’t please or get on with everyone either. Getting some coaching from an accredited coach who specialises in communication, conflict, interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence will be of extreme benefit.
